For driver interchangeability between models, please look up the document named "pricelist-drivers-1976.pdf", but please note that a visual inspection is also necessary as Rectilinear routinely used different driver versions for the same speaker model.​

I have uploaded all these documents to a publicly accessible folder to form a fledgling Rectilinear database for AK members. The URL is given in the attachment (and therefore hidden to non-members): Although a little inconvenient, this is done to keep this a resource for AK members, only, who are the ones who contributed the material. WOW! That's great stuff, Sigurd! I particularly enjoyed Julian Hirsch's glowing reviews of both the original Highboy and the later Lowboy. I was surprised to see that Hirsch's test Rectilinear III Highboy did not have any external controls for adjusting the high frequencies. It seems they changed that quickly to one tweeter control and then to the more common mid and tweeter controls.
I also enjoyed being able to finally peer beneath the grills of the Mini III, as I haven't been able to get the grill cloth off..........There's that famous Philips mid!

Heard of, but never heard those speakers. Gladden Houk said they were the best? I better start looking.

Just a note on the two 1971 crossover schematic versions: they are both wrong, but a hybrid of the two is correct. The v. 2 (submitted by Rolf Zetterberg) is closer to the correct wiring. All of the pots and drivers are accurately described in v.2. However, the wiring of the chokes is more accurate in the v. 1 (submitted by myself). So, to get the correct schematic of the later 1971 Highboy, take the left-hand side of v.1, and combine it with the right-hand side of v.2.

I would draw up a new schematic, but the software I used for drawing up those schematics was shareware, and the license expired.
 
Sigurd, thanks so much for sharing this info. I really enjoyed the Julian Hirsch review. I saw your post while listening to some acoustic Jorma Kaukonan on my Rectlinear III's. Enjoying every moment.

I just downloaded and checked the attachment, and it works fine on my setup.

The download is a PDF file: I would venture a wild guess that your problem might be caused be you not having a PDF reader installed (e.g., Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat). Do you know if you do?

Rec III Info

Thanks for the info- my Rec III's driven by the Yamaha 2010- in conjunction with HPM-60's. It is nice to have the option of running them alone or with the 60's. I am in the process of redoing the basement but here is what the wall of sound looks like now.

Very, very cool resource - thanks! I'm amazed at how the seemingly random placement of drivers (yes, I know they're not random, but compared to a Technics SB7070...) in Rectilinears results is such a good sounding speaker. This should take some of the amazement out of it and replace it with knowledge. :thmbsp:

This Rectilinear owner and enthusiast has sent us additional documents for the Rectilinear database linked to from Post#1 in this thread:

Some of the lower-numbered models (models 2 through 5), as well as the "B" versions, I was unaware of until I read this document. I will look out for them on eBay to get photos for the database.

From another document provided by the same donor we know that the following models were available in 1971 (and MSRP prices per speaker):

  • III Highboy ($280)
  • III Lowboy ($300)
  • Mini III ($100)
  • Xa ($200)
  • XI ($80)
  • XII ($140)

By comparing the model lineup at these two points of time (and the fact that the first document we have for Rectilinear is a III "Highboy" ad from 1966), we get a glimpse of the product development for this company.
