My wife just called me from salvation army & said there are a pair of Rectilinear speakers there & wanted know if they were any good? I did a google on them & there were some good things said about them. She was wanting to now if they were worth getting. Supposed to be from the early 1970's. She said the speakers were in great shape. Good sized and heavy. Anyone ever hear or know about them? Thanks.

I'm getting major audiowood from the mere mention of the name...superb stuff...grab with both hands :thmbsp:

If they are the Rectilinear III like the photo below, they are excellent speakers (assuming they work and the tweeters are not blown).

There is also a "Lowboy" version of the Rectilinear III that is very good.

The other models of Rectilinear (smaller in size than the above), I would pass on any of those.

Just my two cents. Snade

let's hear it for you wife, man how cool is that of her to sniff this one out...

yes

Yes my wife is pretty cool about this type of stuff. She lets me do my thing out back in the rv garage so i can fill it up out there with a ton of sound! As soon as she gets here after running errands I will take some pics & let u all see how they look! Only $25!!!!

Why pass on other models of Rectilinear speakers?

The Rec III was the only speaker in their line that compared well to other speakers of that era. In the early 70's the Rec III compared well in reviews against the AR 3a.

I don't believe any of the other rectilinear models received much attention of note. I'm not saying the other Rectilinear models are bad, just that if you are looking for good vintage speakers of that era (AR, Dynaco, Klipsch, JBL, etc.), the only Rectilinear that competes well is the Rec III.

The resale value of all Rectilinear speakers is low (compared to other vintage brands) because of a lack of name recognition today among vintage collectors, and the Rec III is the only model that has some established value (probably between $75 and $250 a pair). If you buy one of the other rectilinear models, you can expect values of under $50 a pair and a very small market of potential buyers.

Just my experience. Snade

The smaller Rectillinears are perfectly fine for what they are, but they are older smaller speakers with rather large undistingusihed cone tweeters, for the most part. They are not bad by any means, but I don't think they are good enough to create much interest among collectors or listeners. And $25 is pretty big money for a goodwill/tag sale speaker unless it has some outstanding quality. If you need a pair of bookshelf speakers you could do a lot worse, but you could also do a lot better.
On the otherhand, the 3 and 5 seem to get a lot of people excited.
I had a pair of 2s (I think) in lowboy configuration -- wanted them to be better than I thought they were. I thought they were heavy and slow sounding, but the ultimate owner loved them. So, as always, tastes and expectaions differ.
