Championship contender Rubens Barrichello of Brazil walled his Brawn GP, causing a red flag condition in the final minutes of the all important Q3 final qualifying, voiding the scorching final hot laps of young Germans, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg. Both were setting personal and session best sector times, first Rosberg, then the following Vettel.
Both of the championship leading Brawn GP machines will start the race well down the grid, in 10th (Barrichello, who will suffer a 5 grid position penalty for a regulation violating differential change), and Jenson Button, the points leader over Barrichello by 14 markers, will roll off 12th.
Championship rivals Red Bull Renault (still alive in the massively important Manufacturers championship) fared much better...Seb Vettel in P2, and Mark Webber in P2, directly behind Vettel.
A very inauspicious qualifying for Brawn, and when it counts most has to be dismaying for both Brawn drivers....I would love to see the resurgent young Krauts Rosberg and Vettel fighting this one out...Nico is a very hungry young man, and closer than ever to his first win at the pinnacle of motorsport.Next season another Wunderkind will join these two...Nico Hulkenberg is already impressing in his role as a testing driver for the team of Sir Frank Williams.
Rosberg was fastest in Q2, in which all runners are on light fuel loads, and we see the real pace of the contenders, unaffected by the fuel load strategies that either slow the cars in P3, or commit teams to very early pit stops as a function of light fuel loads. This is rarely a sound race strategy- only with a stroke of good fortune such as an early yellow flag (like the one one that so heavily benefited one Fernando Alonso at this race last year, maybe?:nono
saves a driver from what is, in effect, an additional pit stop and a race killer.
This promises to be a very exciting round for the series, and will be televised live on Speed TV tomorrow morning, starting at 7:30 AM Eastern....c'mon over and watch the race!!.... I will be serving French pressed coffee, and weapons grade nicotine, via the unfiltered Chesterfield dispensing method...:yes:
