Rediscovering vintage sound- a personal story

For the last 2 years I've been streaming Flac files from a terabyte music drive via DAC to my stereo system. It's a great setup and sounds fantastic- and being able to choose from 8,000 plus tunes at the click of a mouse still amazes me. So I am very satisfied...

So- while cleaning out some accumulated gear to sell, I uncovered a Pioneer SX-780 and a pair of EPI 100's, both of which I'd bought cheap at a thrift some time ago. The Pioneer was filthy inside and out. One corner of one speaker has a chunk out of the corner, and both are cosemetically challenged (wood top and sides). I cleaned the Pioneer completely, and sprayed some pledge on the EPI's. Then I hooked them up...

...and rediscovered the vintage sound. It's such a distinct sound- I'm surprised I'd forgotten how good it was. Tuned in some new and old rock FM stations, and listened lovingly for hours.

Now my current system still sounds better to me- the Pioneer just doesn't have enough bottom bass, and the EPI's are a little bright. But the sound is like a 70's flashback for me- it brings back the music of my early audio addict days in a very special way.

Now my music room is small, and it will be a bit crammed in here- but the Pioneer and the EPI's are going to stay...:yes:

A very good friend of mine has that amplifier. Pioneer sure did make great stuff back in the day. Both very pleasing on the eyes and a tank of an amp. Hears to that good sound!:beerchug:
 
Those are some good feelings. As Bob Marley sang " I am a man from the past, living in the present, walking in the future." Stay cool and keep that Pioneer close to your ears.(LOL)
 
It's nice to come back from the dark side every now and then, two totally different and acceptable worlds. :smoke:
 
Just had that receiver paired with some Polk Monitor 7's pass through here. Another very satisfying system.
 
Are the surrounds good on the EPIs?

I ask because I have never heard a Pioneer to be lacking in bass.

Is the Pioneer in prime condition, for that mattrer?

I am NOT trying to spoil your fun.

It's the Pioneer, since I swapped 2 other pairs of speakers in for testing. Just weak in the bass. All other functions on the reeciver work perfect (far as I can tell).
