Reel Tape

Is there anyplace that sells new reel tape or can you buy it by the spool or something and put it on an empty reel? I guess I could take some of my 7" reels an put them on 10 1/2 reels, but I would worry about the splice.

Thanks for those tips...any tips on recording to tape..such as, well all of it...I have several decks and tons of tape...just not sure what the "good" types of tape are and what settings to use...how to avoid any distortion, etc.

Keep the peaks just a hair above 0 VU (on a meter with "VU" ballistics, i.e., not a peak meter, it is fine to go a bit above "zero" for peaks - only experience will tell what's OK for your deck and tape formulation).

For dubbing recorded music on consumer decks, by and large it is hard to beat Maxell UD tape. No longer in production, but not particularly hard to find either.

For RMGI tape, I found Full Compass to be an excellent source. They carry a full line of RMGI in both 7 and 10.5" on reels and in pancake form. Cheaper then US Recorders too!!
When I record, I keep the meters at 0db and peaks to +3 to +5. It really does make a difference on the tape you use. I use either maxell XLI, UD and RMGI LPR-35.
