Rega Camber 1.5

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a pair of speakers for my Marantz 2235 I just bought. Just for vinyl, radio and possibly an iPod. Looks like there is a pair of Rega Camber 1.5 in nice shape for sale in my area. $140 Other choices is a set of CV D3s. and maybe a new set of Pioneer FS52s. I have a pair of Realistic MC-2001 in my garage that I will be hooking up in the meantime to get me by. Let me know what you guys think my best choice is and any thoughts on a decent set. Thanks!

I guess it depends on what music you will listen to. I would personally choose the Cambers, but if your a loud, rock fan, I would look at those D3's and bring the price down, if you can. The 1.5s look very respectable by their stats, even for a bookshelf speaker. The Pioneers appear to be A/V speakers that are selling at Walmart for less, so I would ignore them.

I listen to old classic rock, 70s, 80s, blues, music etc. A complete variety. I don't need anything that have a huge thump since it is in my man cave in the basement. Something that can sound great on a variety of music. I tried out my pioneer BS22s, sounded really good but lacked some bass. I don't really want a sub either.

Also the speakers look in mint shape but no grills. He's asking $140. Is this still worth it?

I have had the .5 and the 2.5 and both were excellent speakers so I would say sonically yes, worth the money but they are so obscure that my guess is the seller will not find a buyer at $140 (US?) without grills. You can wait until he figures that out or make him an offer now.

Certainly don't be afraid of the Camber speakers. I have been following the brand for a while. They initially showed up as Rega speakers, as the manufacturer in Ottawa, Edon Acoustics, were the Canadian importers of Rega equipment from the UK, and used the Rega name on their early speakers. They were developed using the facilities at the national sound laboratory in Ottawa. When Rega decided to import their own speakers to North America, Edon had to stop using the Rega name on their speakers and adopted the Camber name. I think the name change was transitional, as the Camber speakers I currently own say Rega-Camber on the back plate. I owned another later pair that said Camber only on them. It appears that the Rega 1.0 and 2.0 translate to later Camber 1.5 and 2.5. I have also seen Camber 3.5 (and maybe, then, Rega 3.0?). The bottom line is that these are fine speakers, with exceptional build quality. They featured a close-fitting wood brace across the back of the woofer magnet. Yes, when you see them listed at slightly higher prices, the value alarms go off, but they are worth the $150 to $250 the vendors are usually asking. They might not get that because they are an unknown quantity. Never-the-less, a great sounding speaker, and certainly worth an audition if you see a pair.
