Rega P1 Possibility

I'm on the edge of getting a Rega P1 for 250 or 300 with a Bellari 129 tubed pre-amp. What do you guys think, is this an upgrade? Downgrade? I'm using a Yamaha YP-D6 right now with an Audio Technica 6006.

I just got rid of mine and went with a vintage PL-550. It gets good reviews but I just wasn't happy with the plastic tonearm, plastic hinges, plastic legs. And if you ever go to upgrade the cartridge you can't get a proper alignment with 90% of the cartridges out there.

I think the P1 is a great 'table, but, having never heard your Yamaha, I can't say whether the P1 would be an upgrade. Do you have a chance to audition it before purchase?

I don't understand the reference to a plastic tonearm on the P1; it's an alloy tube with aluminum headshell. Also, the feet aren't plastic but rubber, and, as with other Rega turntables, each foot is tuned for the mass it supports at its particular location. The RB100 has shorter headshell slots than other Rega turntables, so there are many cartridges that you won't be able to attain Baerwald alignment with, but if you use Rega's own alignment scheme (which is similar to Stevenson in using less overhang and having the innermost null point closer to the spindle than Baerwald or Lofgren B), there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not suggesting the P1 is the best 'table on the market, but it offers good sound for the price. I bought one for a friend a couple years ago, and a few of his friends have been impressed enough by hearing it in his system to get one of their own. As always, it's best if you can hear it with your own ears before making a decision.

My point is 300 dollars can buy you a much better table than a P1. If you ever have the chance to actually see one in person you will see the overabundance of very cheap plastic.

Not to ruffle any feathers but I owned it, it's crap.

Happy P1 owner here! Sonically it exceeds other vintage TTs I have. The tonearm is alloy, not plastic. The rubber feet are the same rubber feet Rega's been using for years. If you consider changing the stock cartridge, I would recommend Rega cartridges or the Ortofon 2M series for ease of perfect alignment. But apart for the Ortofons, with any other cartridge you might get into VTA issues if that cartridge is not as tall as the stock Ortofon. Very simple, reliable and musical TT.
