Rega Planar 25 Turntable

Greetings to all, and thank you for allowing me to join your forum!

Returnee/newbie to turntables from the 70's and 80's. I'm taking the plunge. Looking at a Rega Planar25 with only a table, motor (two of them in fact) and belt (two of these as well) for $240. How good an idea to build it from there little by little with RB303 or similar and appropriate cart, versus a ready-to-go VPI HW19JR with Grado Plat cart and Audioquest PT6 arm for $595?

I'm fairly handy, so the assembly of the Rega products is not a threat. Budget is flexible up to $1,000 or so.

Feedback/thoughts/suggestions welcome!

At $1000 on the used market you can find some very good deals. In fact, there is currently a Rega RP40 on Audiogon for under $1k and it comes with cartridge, arm, and speed control box.
 
The rp40 is a tweaked rp3 which has the rb303 arm, but with the addition of the rp6 feet. The Planar 25 may still have a better plinth and motor.

But the vpi for $595 w/ cart sounds like a better deal.
 
I'm almost certain the motors are the same (the P25 was the first with the 24v PSU compatible motor, right?).

I have no idea about the VPI or Audioquest arm, maybe they are better and the price is nice.

Great thoughts, I appreciate the feedback everyone. Will decide in the next couple of days. The VPI may be the "safer" route...
 
an early 90s planar 3 with rb300 arm and glass platter in well cared for condition can be had on this side of the pond for less than £150 if you follow a few ebay auctions. At those prices you'd be left with a decent chunk of change for any retro fittable upgrades to the sub platter, pulley or motor....or simply add a new belt and a decent cartridge to the standard deck. The early 90's planar 3s still sound very good to my ears
