Here are some pics of my newly fixed up ar xa. had watter damage on old cabinet and bad pitting on top plate, sanded down painted and built a new box for it. good as new, well maybe a little better, I replaced the suspension springs with some new ones with screw on bottoms I got from a guy on another forum. enjoy, I am...

Beautiful box! I got an XB recently needing similar TLC.
 
Great photos. They brought back memories of the first XA I ever saw. It was 1970 and I was in 8th grade vocal music class. The teacher had a console with a Stromberg '8' amplifier and that turntable. Being 14 at the time, and limited to strictly Radio Shack shopping, it was probably the nicest table I had ever seen. I had never seen a suspension in a turntable like that. I remember being SO taken by it!

Nice job on that refurb! How long have you owned it? If it was water damaged did moisture hurt any of the mechanics?
 
A friend of mine gave it to me at work for free, It had been sitting in the box in her garage, only the wood was damaged, put some phono-lube in the baring holes and that was all it needed. they are really so simple not much to go wrong. the motor was still good.
 
Wow, Joe, that's a really beautiful restore! I like the look, the light wood is very elegant.

Chicks, yes, if the price is right, the XA/XB are excellent machines, lots of records get spinning on those old beauties.
 
Again, excellent work, it is beautiful. I think it's funny that somebody would put that much work into this turntable, and not mod/replace the armwand to accept standard headshells. To each their own of course, the OEM headshell does look pretty nice too.

Also, why is it that everybody wants to buy and old AR, except the people close enough for me to do local delivery?

My AR-XA since being restored has become my main table. I use it with a Shure M91ED with Jico SAS. Unbelievably good sound.

If mine had a headshell, I probably would have left it alone.
 
Beautiful! Mine is stock, short of the Hurst motor replaced because I dropped the deck and snapped off the motor spindle at the pulley! Works and sounds awesome. I would recommend this iconic early table to anyone looking for a manual.
