Remote assistance requested

I posted this on the Yamaha board with limited response so I am opening it here in hopes of reaching a wider audience.

Just picked up a nice AX1050 that is missing the remote. It seems as though the unit has the muting circuit engaged(flashing led on volume control) and there is no way to dis-engage it without the remote........or is there ???????

I was able to look up the part # for the remote from the service manual, VL208500; but searching the web yields no available replacements/substitutes.

a) Is there a way to turn off the muting circuit without the remote ?

b) does anyone have a remote I could buy or borrow, or know where I could get one ?

c) does anyone know of another remote that might work with this unit ?

I tried the remote from my DSP-3090a with no luck.

Any suggestions, recommendations, ideas ????

I have thought about the universal remote route and I realize they are not expensive but I would hate to waste the money/time unless someone else can chime in that has been successful.

Most universal remotes seem to be biased more towards video equipment like TV's, VCR's, DVD players etc because there are far more of them than even the most popular audio equipment.

You should contact Logitech Harmony controls, they will tell you if they have codes for it. The Harmony 350 is a $40 control off of Amazon, but it may not work all the functions of your unit. Are you sure that the flashing light isn't indicating it is in protection mode. With muting on you should still get some output at 40 to 60 db down.

Thanks for the info, I sent them an email earlier today.

I have been using it and it sounds great, just would like to turn the muting (-20db) off and unleash this beast.

If you have no luck finding anything I do have an old Universal remote that was for Cable/TV/VCR that was in good working order before I stored it away that I'll send ya.
Without taking a photo of it, here's one that looks almost Identical to it except for a few button placements.

Harmony has a good chance of working. Haven't found anything it won't control yet. Surprisingly, Logitech actually had a few codes for a Luxman TP-117 but not all of them, which really helped me with a thrift store find. Their tech support people are also helpful, when I found a code list they threw together a fake device so I could test them, and hopefully the full code set will go live soon.

I'd recommend a 665 which appears to be an updated 650 that will control ten devices instead of eight. They're about $40 "refurbished" on Amazon.

You can see if they have codes for your device here, although that won't tell you if they're 100% complete or not.

It appears that they do have at least some of the codes for your AX1050.

Alternately, there is a site "remotecentral.com" that has forums, and also lists of codes for various devices, if your device is listed and the codes are posted you could either send them to Logitech (which is what I did) or else use some other universal remote that's programmable e.g. Pronto (something that I am looking into, main reason being that I have two TP-117s and the second one is worthless without either finding another original remote, or being able to program a universal remote with ALL the commands)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I was able to locate the capacitor in question, it's even conveniently marked "backup". Unfortunately it looks anything but convenient to access. I could probably order a remote from Amazon and have it arrive before I completed the necessary disassembly to access it.

Curiously there is a section of circuitry marked "reset" next to the capacitor..........Anyone know what it does and how to activate it?

There are also markings for the IC legs marked "muting" in the center of photo 2, any ideas if they can be shorted/jumpered to fix this issue ?

I have the SM and snipped a few sections hoping someone might have an idea ?

resets all settings to factory default? Don't know how to activate it. Service manual no help? That might disengage muting, come to think of it.

If you're an all original kind of guy, you could set up an eFlay search for the factory remote as well.

Reset to factory settings(Initialize All)

Note: This operation will be performed on the front panel of the unit only.

1. Set the unit to standby mode. (Use the Main Zone button on the front panel of the unit.) Also make sure that Zone 2 is powered off as well.

2. While holding down the STRAIGHT button, press the POWER button.

3. ADVANCED SETUP and then SP IMP will show up on the front panel. (Make sure you let go of the Straight button.)

4. Press the PROGRAM ARROW button to the right repeatedly to get to INITIALIZE.......CANCEL.

5. Press the STRAIGHT repeatedly to get to INITIALIZE........ALL.

6. Power off the unit.

7. Power the unit back on and you will now be back to factory settings.
