Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone holds a DIY instructions for a remote controller for the AU series.
A kit is ok too with installation instructions.

Remote controller and IR kits (or circuits) to install in AU-517/617/717.... which are basically the same in terms of operation

Exact replacements for the volume controls are unobtainable now, imagine how 'available' motorised exact replacements would be. :sigh:

I think your request is a non-starter.

Hi,

There are a number of remote volume kits and completely assembled product on that auction site, just try searching for "remote volume" in the consumer electronics section.

For the 717, it may be possible to use something like these connected to the pre out/ main in, or connected to the tape play/rec.

Cheers

How To Make An All Analog Do-It-Yourself Remote Controller For Any Vintage Integrated Amplifier

1] Go to a lawn mower shop or a bicycle shop and get as many control levers as there are amp functions you want to control, and a length of cable with the push-pull wire inside (a bit longer than needed) for each function you want to control.

2] Construct a cable termination mounting frame to be set under the front of the amp face from which each of the actuating wires may be attached or oriented to operate the various buttons and knobs you want to control. Build it into the rack or whatever that supports the amp.

3] Since the front face of the amp is going to have a bunch of cables with wires actuating the knobs and buttons all over it, it is going to look different, but you may take a glamor shot of your amp face (or down load a nice one from the internet), print it to actual size, and place that in the rack in front of of your cosmetically compromised amp to totally regain any lost WAF.

4] Run the labeled cables as a bundle to your listening recliner... under the floor is ideal if possible.

5] Redo the arms of the recliner to house built-in solid mounting surfaces within which to install the control levers (with labels of their functions).

6] Enjoy operating your amp from the relaxing comfort of your recliner and resist the suggestions from others that you might want to seek out some professional counceling.

There a few " inline" remote volume controls on E bay, from China that allow this function... all you have to do pick 1 , build it if is a kit... in a seperate box.. and insert it in the pre / main ports....

now thats an interesting project for someone, any volunteers,.... didnt think so

What a defeatist thing to say.

Just get a motorised 100K Alps blue with a loudness tap (or not, you don't need it), correct non-splined solid shaft and the correct taper. There are plenty of IR circuits as easy as pie to drive a clutch driven Alps blue.

Here's one (no affil) http://www.altronics.com.au/p/k5026-remote-volume-control-kit/

I've done it many times in the past for older people who needed remote volume on an amplifier they loved.

I think I am not enthusiatic about installing such a thing from the originality/unmolested point of view. The volume control will not be a direct & exact replacement and presumably you will need to drill holes in the front panel for the sensors?.... not for me.

2nd the external only........do not " modify " the Sansui unless you do not care about resale....

External ! - bah-humbug.

If you absolutely, totally, completely HAVE to have one - then ok to external :)

I find it a pity that the usual response around here to someone wanting to modify their amplifier, is "leave it a alone", "don't modify it" etc. This entire hobby was started and built upon by hobbyists modifying and DIY'ing their gear.

My interests and lifelong passion was started by building, modifying and fixing audio related gear.

I think it is great he wants to modify this amplifier to do what he wants.

After all, it's just an AU-717. 10's of thousands were made. I've got several in boxes just for spare parts. It's not rare and never will be. They are a nice enough amplifier, but if someone wants to make a remote volume for it, why rain on his parade?

Remote volume is one of those things that practically everyone appreciates and was sorely missing back in the 70s hi-fi days. Personally, I don't care one way or another. I'm used to walking up to my gear and turning the knob. I was my Dad's remote control in the 70s!

But installing a remote in an AU-717 is not a sin. It is pretty easy and doesn't require anything that is not reversible (but does that really matter anyway?). If he wants a remote window in the front panel, go find a donor piece of gear with a nice round red IR window you can gut out, drill an identical hole for the window and set it above the power switch. It'd look fine there.

But realistically, to the OP: If you want unbiased help on installing a remote volume, it may be better to post in DIY, because the "Exclusively Sansui" section has more collectors and doing anything to something with the Sansui name on it, can be an anathema to them. :)

FWIW, I wanted an external IR volume control to work with my AU-9500. Ended up getting an Emotiva XDA-2 which does a beautiful job of integrating volume control & source switching to all my digital sources. Still have to hop up to adjust vinyl, but that doesn't bother me in the least. AND, I really do feel like my digital files (esp lower quality files) sound better through the DAC, so that's a nice bonus!!!
