Removing the sub platter on a Thorens TD160B II

I hope someone can help me here


I am in the process of restoring my TD160B II /SME 3009 II which I bought in 1974, and about to order the cleaning kit/ oil and new belt from Jo in Germany

After 20 years of being stored I am having real problems removing the sub platter ready for cleaning and oiling the bearing. I can never remember having this problem before. I am wondering if the storage has resulted in the bearing oil drying out causing this problem. I am very reluctant to put too much pressure in trying to remove this in case I bend the spindle.

Has anyone any tips please ?

I believe there is a c clip holding it on. Open up the bottom and look. Mine had the c clip.

Thanks so much for the reply. I can never recall a C clip as the sub platter used to just lift out, my memory is not great these days though so it may well be that. Could you signpost me to exactly where that C clip is please

Se if you see something like these pics show. One of the 160's I've had did have the original plastic spindle collar and retaining device for keeping the platter on. Pictures were taken from The Analog Department web-site.

Pics above show what holds the platter on my TD-160B II w/SME IIIS. Remove the screw on the bottom. Took me a while to figure out when I brought it home last year.

I've removed this platter a number of times over the years and never remembered that clip. Just checked and you are right. Problem solved, now to wait for Jo,s kit. Any other tips on restoring this beauty guys ?

As for the table itself go to the link below. Tons of information on the Thorens tables, I use it as my main reference when it comes to anything dealing with a Thorens TT. Good Luck!

Show us a pic of the bottom of your frame and subframe. If it is not sound deadened, it should be based on theanalogdept info and the TD-160 Super which used many of the upgrades the tweakers were mentioning in a magazine article back in the day. The 3/4" plywood botom cover was part of those upgrades. I don't know what the ...B II came with from the factory.
