Renaissance 90s

I just picked up a pair of Ren 90s this morning.:) They look pretty good, no dings or big scratches. I'v only just got them home and hooked them up but so far so good. I haven't gotten a chance to hook the monoblocks up to them yet, hopefully I can do that on Monday. I'm curious what equipment you guys would recomend running up stream of them. Also they did not come with the pointed feet, any ideas on where to find some? Or make some?

Beautiful! My 90's will never leave my possesion, they are the ruler by which I measure sound now.

They are very inefficient, so the more power the better they'll sound. Don't expect loud rock and roll bass, but do expect them to reproduce EVERYTHING they are fed. I use a pair of subs with mine in the big room, but in a small room they do everything at all volumes including bass. It's extremely accurate bass.

7.62 has put spike feet on rens, He'll know where to find them.

They are SUPER neutral. They sound nothing like any other speaker I've heard. I've read they were inefficient, hopefully my amps will be enough for now, my listening room is pretty small anyway. Have you put tube equipment on them? I was thinking about trying out the Schitt Freya, I've been really happy with their DAC.

I'm a bit of a heretic, I've driven mine with 30 year old Carver Pro gear, and also with lepai chip amps, 7498(I think) 100 wpc @ 4 ohms.
Fed fully balanced and also unbalanced signals, they superbly reproduce whatever they're fed, good bad, or ugly.
I'd love to hear them powered with tubes, but I haven't owned a tube amp since the early nineties.

Congrats, nice pick up, When I bought my pair of Ren 90's the seller was driving them with a Bat tube amp on top, I have to say it sounded really nice, don't remember the model # of the amp but I remember it being a stereo one.

NICE!
Spikes are available many places.
With their light weight you could probably buy some on ebay and get free or really cheap shipping.
If you want OEM spikes that might be a little more difficult.
The important thing is getting the correct thread size, maybe someone here knows what that is.

Thanks for the info goodolpg. :) I'll take look on ebay or maybe part express, if no one chimes in on the size I'll take calipers to them on Monday and figure it out.

That's good to hear. I'v used a tube buffer in the past with limited success. It always sounded better with the RSIIAs than any other speakers I tried it with, really made the EMIMs sing. I'v always wanted a tube pre, now I've got a reason to try one out, just got to sell somethings first.

I don’t know if this helps you much, it’s the smaller of the 2 standard type threads. You can order the spike kits with the insert but you have to drill the bottom plate to make them work.

I get mine from Parts express, ebay is an option also.

The left is the correct thread, the right gold plated spike is the larger and doesn’t work.

I use an Adcom GFA-545. You can get one in great condition on ebay.
I wait an hour for the amp to reach operating temperature and then the
sound is sweet. I get outstanding imaging. I recommend placing the
speakers 7-10 feet apart and 3 feet from the back wall, with no toe-in
(Depending on your room size). If you have a large room, give them
As much space as you can. You will be rewarded.
I also bi-wire with high-end Monster Cable (I am sure some people are
cringing :-).

The music can get pretty loud without clipping. Someday I hope to drive
them with a Pass Labs X250.8 (mucho dinero). I prefer amps that
operate primarily in class A at the volumes I listen to music. Adcoms
are biased to operate in class A for the first 7 watts or so, if my memory
serves me correctly.

I’ve had these speakers since new in 1991. They still behave like they
are brand new. Treat them eith respect and they are there for the long haul.
I auditioned 32 brands of speakers and chose them (by a side margin).
I hope you enjoy your speakers.

Nice! My friends got that amp, super sweet and musical, decent bass response too. I've got some Adcom amps packed away at home, I'll give them a try, see how they sound compared to my B&K amps.

I forgot to say congrats on your new 90’s !!!

Finding the original spikes is going to be a s rare as finding hens teeth as they say. And they are quite long, if memory serves me right I think they’re 1-1/2 inches long.when installed.

And I thought I’d add this, I got a return email from Graz. He says he only gets about 8 emails a year for the high energy emit and emim diaphragms. But he is keeping a list. Personally if he decides to make them I’d love to have a pair of each for each speaker in case mine ever fail.

Thanks for the tip, I never would have thought to Email him. Its been a while since he's made any EMIMs right? That would be awesome to be able to get some spairs.

Just a quick update. I put the Adcoms on them and wow, they just opened up. Highs sound better and cleaner, the bass is tighter and punchy, and the soundstage is almost rediculous. I'm actually very surprised by how neutral they are. I stopped using those amps because on the Kappa 8s I had to limit the volume and length of my listening session or my ears would feel it. I've been listening to the Rens all morning and they sound perfect. As for floor spikes, I measured the holes this morning at just under .25 inch so the 6mm floor spikes should be the right size. I bought these

Off of parts express, just got to wait for them to show up, hope everything fits fine.

Would you mind showing a pic of the spikes installed, I may order the same. What sucks is I think I have a complete set of originals but I stashed them so good I can’t find them......LOL.

Man that's a bummer:(, I hate when that happens. I'll post another update with pictures when the spikes come in.

I had a machinist friend make some out of aluminum and the right size threaded bolt. Though I did have a couple original Infinity spikes for him to go by. You cannot tell them apart though. He charged me nothing, but even if you do not know someone, it should not be much for a machinist to make you some inexpensively. Would need someone kind enough to send you the dimensions, angles, etc... The Renaissance spikes look exactly like the ones on the Kappa 9.1s though, so probably the same.

I went to lowes this morning and spent $7.00 on these.

The thread is 1/4 x 20. I like them elevated and the sound, well....it's good.
