Repainting silver vintage cabinet

What is it you’re wanting to paint exactly? Just silver colored case, can you tell us what it is exactly? I hope you’re not meaning an anodized face or something like that.

Dan

Dan has this right. We have no idea of what you are talking about.

There are some that have the removable metal covers on gear powder coated. That would be better but not for the faceplate.

I do not need to paint this piece but this is representative of something that might have a bad paint finish and I want to repaint the cabinet NOT THE FRONT !!
so I am asking what people have used with great success to paint the cabinets of older audio silver equipment

You'd want to use use a "Satin" or "Low Gloss" finish on it. If you really want to be precise, places that sell automotive refinishing supplies could scan the color, and mix you up a spray can of it.

I originally Thought the metallic finish didn’t come in satin but I did find this and this might be right
I also will see how much it is to scan a color. I am on a limited budget

I am looking to hear from people who do refinishing of “silver” cabinets for their experiences so I dont have to buy several cans of paint and experiment

There are a number of gray metal type finish spray paints in the auto parts stores. Maybe take a look at what your local stores have, take your cover with you and see if you find one you like. Might not be an exact match but choices.

There are different brands and these brands have different lines of spray paint. I was hoping to learn from people who already have tried various paints for older “silver” equipment and learned from their experiences

One thing I would love to get expert experienced feedback about is which of these did the best job
I see two metallic lines and each line has three possibilities, nickel, silver, and aluminum

I want this to have on hand so if and when I have a vintage “silver” cabinet to paint I have something good to use, even if it’s not a perfect match, looking for something that looks good. My intent is not to buy a can of paint everytime I have a new piece to paint but use the same can that could be considered an excellent all purpose choice for rejuvenating “silver equipment” of which I may just do for fun and then pass it along to someone else to enjoy. I have a choice already for black cabinets, but not sure about the silver choice.

There probably isn't a lot of repainting silver cabinets around here. A lot of this silver faced stuff has wooden sides and partially wooded tops with black trim. I do have some stuff with silver cabinets but have never repainted them.

Silver is a bear to paint. It shows everything if not perfect. I do a LOT of black panels using Rustoleum Textured since many of the panels are spatter painted so blending is easy, but for the tuff stuff, I call on the powder coater dude. They HAVE to blast it before powder and baking so they turn out great. Maybe try Powder Coating. The color choice now days is near unlimited and the results are professional looking.

thanks for that feedback, at first I will play around with repainting worthless silver audio cabinets (garage or thrift store stuff that might cost me $10) so if it comes out bad there is no loss and I will know for sure never to try anything I value.

So I called an auto supply store about custom matching and making spray cans
they said a minimum of 4 cans and the cost would be around $100 and up for the 4 cans

does anyone know a cheaper alternative ? Lowes does matching but not do spray cans

I just got a wonderful HK670 for restoration and the cabinet has paint splattered on it ( but fortunately not the front panel !) and would love to get the proper spray paint for it

Are you familiar with the look of clean cast aluminum? The Duplicolor Cast Coat Aluminum spray paint from the auto parts store does a really nice job of reproducing that, but I've never tried it on a smooth, flat panel. I've only ever used it to re-paint cast aluminum things that were grungy and wouldn't clean up. Used it on the cam cover and the intake on one of my cars and someone asked me where I'd found NOS parts.

maybe take the lid with you to the store and see if anything matches up reasonably well.

yes, for silver cabinets that seems like the safest approach
