Repair my Phase Linear 400 in San Francisco Bay?

Hello everyone,

I bought in June 2019 a Phase Linear 400 on Ebay for $400, described as "Recently Serviced".

It worked like a charm for 1 year, but suddenly one day while I was listening, a big sound "bzzzzzz" came out of the left speaker. The speaker was "out" by half of an inch.

I immediately unplugged the Phase, something wrong happened.

Since then, I tried to make a quote at Champlifier in Alameda, CA but the price was way too expensive compared to what I paid originally. They asked ~$800 total ($140 for the estimate that I paid + $625 if I wanted to fix the problem). I didn't accept their quote of $625 and only paid $140.

They described the problem as follow:

(1) Checked and found this unit had a load bussing due to high voltage on the speaker output.
(2) The AC Ripple was higher than normal on the Main Filter Capacitors.
(3) There are also multiple defective/ out of spec components that will need to be replaced.

Is there anyone that you know who could repair my Phase Linear, here, in California (SF Bay preferred)?

You could try Sertech electronics located in the South Bay.

Phoenix audio forum is also a resource for asking anything phase linear.
Maybe research White Oak Audio and WOPL if you want to go down that route.

So the "recently serviced" may not have been correct huh?

Recently serviced means that it powers on, sound comes out, controls may have been cleaned, and there are no defects immediately showing. That's about it.
When reading the various descriptions of "restored" "refurbished" "serviced" , etc., gear for sale, it occurs to me that virtually all of them overlook the dried out thermal compound on the output devices. Not to say that's what happened here.

I have a Phase Linear 400 on the bench which is in the process of a complete rebuild/restoration.

One STRONG recommendation for you is (when you get your 400 repaired) is to have them install the speaker protection relay board - designed (and sold) by a very helpful AK member Don Imlay @d3imlay.
It fits perfectly inside over the speaker terminals.

+1 on White Oak mods, they take the 400 to another level, and the protection circuit is a must.
