Repair Sony SS-7300 Midrange "Diaphragm"

Hello everyone,

I’m relatively new to HiFi repairs and have been wanting to get an old HiFi system for quite some time now. I recently came across some old Sony SS7300 speakers, which I’ll be picking up soon. On one of the speakers, the diaphragm of the midrange driver is missing. The seller mentioned that the diaphragm just needs to be replaced.

My question is: Does anyone have tips for how to fix this at home on my own? Alternatively, if I need to replace the driver, which replacement would you recommend? Or does anyone happen to have an old spare driver to offer? The driver in question is a Sony 1230M, but I couldn’t find much about it online.

I’d appreciate any helpful advice, and I’m looking forward to a fun vinyl evening soon with my new/old/refurbished speakers! :-)

Hi Lucas, and welcome to AudioKarma.

This is not an easy thing to fix for anybody, I’d want to have done a lot of repairs before tackling this. Even a pro would need exactly the right parts to make it sound like it should.

Unless you can find a replacement driver easily I recommend looking for another pair of speakers, preferably from a seller who isn’t as misleading as this one appears to be.

Okay i might just visit my local hifi shop, which is also doing repairs and ask them if they could imagine to try this fix.
Do you have any tips where to look for the driver on japanese auction sites? As they are Sonys I think my chances are better looking for them overseas.
There is also some guy on ebay selling the woofers and I asked him if he also has some midrange drivers spare, lets see.

PS: I could get the speakers for a 100€ bucks, which seems pretty cheap to me and I would love to have this kind of christmas bargain on some nice speakers. Theirfore I could spend more towards a nice amplifier, Accuphase etc. which pairs nicely with those vintage speakers.
 
You should factor in the repair cost or time into the price and check whether the value still makes sense, or can you get something just as good and working for a similar price. You may need to be patient for something appropriate to become available.

I don’t have experience finding drivers overseas but others here will. You could search posts for who these people are and where they’ve looked.
