Repairing an old peerless alnico tweeter

Total success!!! As some of you may have seen in my other thread, I picked up these Dynatron 3 ways with all Peerless alnico drivers, turned out to have 1 dead tweeter. So, I thinks to myself, its dead anyway and I'v got loads of cheapo spare ones lying around... Can you see where this is going yet? Of course, take old cone and coil from another tweeter and transplant it to the old Peerless.

Found an old pair of Akai 2 ways with same size cone and dustcap (for cosmetics) on the tweet, cut very carefully around the edge of the surround and peeled back the cone slightly to shine a light on the coil. Sweet, looks about the right size and measures .1 ohm different, even has the foam damping ring behind the cone.

Out comes the soldering iron, desoldered the old tweets tinsel leads and same with the new assembly. Dropped the new cone and coil over the magnet of the Peerless, perfect fit. Soldered the tinsel leads back on twice, somehow got the polarity wrong the first time :S and glued the edge of the cone down with clear nail polish :D the mrs will moan but heyho it works well.

Time to fire it up, conned directly to amp with 4.7uf cap for protection. We have sound!!! No resonances or rattles, and very clear sounding treble. Next, I took the other working Peerless and wired it up in the same manner side by side to see how they sound... To my ears, they sound identical, and I'm ecstatic!!!

Thanks guys, not bad for my second ever tweeter repair... The other being a kef T27 but thats a different story :D quite pleased really, the more im listening to these, the repaired set soumd better, might have to do the other one at least so it matches cosmetically, worth it do ya reckon?

Have you measured your results (other than using your ears)? Wonder if you got close to the Peerless.

I doubt theres much there to lose in translation but heyho.

Thanks for your congrats, I would love to measure them but any kind of equipment like that is way outta my budget :( just gonna enjoy the sound for now I think.
 
In twenty years thee will be a thread on here with whoever ends up with these in the future asking if Peerless ever used that type of cone paper.
 
I confess I don't understand the point here. You may have well have used the Akai tweeter...what you have there is neither Peerless or Akai.

The peerless tweets are very good, but hard to find these days...

The same could be said for any repair done with aftermarket parts. Are you against ever doing repairs with anything other than the factory cones, coils, foams, etc.?

Yes, given that good drivers are designed by people who know what they were doing, I'd say that 99 percent of the time if an amateur changes some a key element, they will end up with a worse product. When I was younger I did more than a few such experiments....

That seems unnecessarily derogatory and it doesn't answer my question.

Do you think that one should not bother to repair an item if OEM parts are unavailable? I still don't see any difference between what this guy did and a fix with an "off the shelf" coil and cone.

OP, I think you did well for an "amateur". :smoke:
