Replace or suitable? ST-801

As a new member here, I was hoping for a bit of advice...

Question: Is this turntable worth it? Sherwood ST-801. Used to have a Pioneer PL-45D which died, and I didn't know what I might have had, so tossed it. So I got the Sherwood ST-801 via my wife (when we married 25yrs ago) Bought a new belt, but still unsure of its overall quality… sound is “ok”.. .which I know could be cartridge / speakers Polk 40’s / or the Kenwood receiver. I’ve been browsing eBay & Craig’s list for upgrades. One I found locally: Technics SL-D20 with a new cartridge for $80 with a Sound Bliss mat. a) is it an upgrade? Thought of offering $60…

Or what models to upgrade should I look for, if at all? Nothing super dramatic, but used for $100, of decent quality..

Thanks

Welcome to AK :) I cannot find much on that table, so a picture would help us with ID'ing who may have made it. Also, what cartridge is on there right now?

Details, ST-801

I couldn't either, which sort of worries me....Cartridge looks to be an Empire OP 2 Which I also know nothing about.

The ST-801 is a Semi Automatic 33 /45 turntable. It has Anti-skating adjustments & Counterweight adjustments (good?). Straight tone arm.

Is the base wood veneer or metal, or plastic? The Anti-Skate and Counterweight are a good start :) Straight tonearm makes me think 80's possibly. Not a bad thing.

Plastic all the way...

It's plastic.... gray, boring plastic. Leads me to cheaper thoughts

And the platter is a bit smaller than the vinyl sitting on it; tapered though. At the bottom, the platter is the same as the record, but it tapers to the record and is probably 1" inch smaller (1/2" all the way around).

When I replaced the belt, I remember the platter not being very heavy... my older Pioneer was more stout than this one.

Gotcha, sounds like an entry level table. The Technics should be a step up IMHO, as it is considered Lower Mid level table. I would offer 60 and see what happens. There are quite a few vintage tables in your price range. Keep in mind that a cartridge, if the table does not have one, will add to the price.
