Replace wonder caps in PS Audio 4.6 with mundorf?

Hello. I have a PS Audio 4.6 preamp and it has 4 small Wonder caps in it(boutique cap of the time) and I was wondering if replacing them with newer boutique caps, like mundorf, would make a noticeable difference. Has anybody tried this? Thanks, Brian

Wonder caps were great. I've got them in my Audio Research SP-8. Why mess with great sound?

Always trying to squeeze a little more out of my equipment. I used mundorfs silver oil in a speaker recap and liked what I heard so I thought why not my preamp.

I suppose it is worth a try. I have never heard a comparison of these two particular models. If you decide to do it, please be sure and post a report.

I need to take a look and see how difficult it is to get to the bottom of the board on the 4.6. Parts Connexion has a 33% off sale on one value I need but I am having a hard time finding the other value, .0233. Any opinions on replacing that value with a .022? If i do this i will report my findings. Thanks, Brian

I would not worry about that difference in value. 0.022 is a standard value. You will not likely find a 0.233 anywhere. At that value, I would recommend going the full monty and get you some teflon capacitors. I have done this to a couple of units and after a judicious burn in it has made a trememndous improvement.

My logic might be a bit fuzzy here but I wonder why a circuit designer would pick an odd hard to find and most likely custom value like .0233 when they could just stick in a stock .022? Do you think that maybe they choose that value to perhaps optimize the performance of what ever circuit those are in? :scratch2:

That's a good question, and I wonder the same thing but I am not knowledgable enough to say. Maybe someone else could chime in on that. Isotonic I am glad to hear that you had noticeable improvements doing something similar, that gives me more motivation to try it. I can't get too crazy with the costs which is why I was looking at the mundorfs with 33% off. Thanks for the input, Brian
