Replacement Cartridge for Pioneer PL-707

I am looking for a replacement phono cartridge for a Pioneer PL-707. What I have learned is there were four models made. The model KUT and KCT was made for the US and Canada markets and was not supplied a phono cartridge. However, the other models were supplied with a PC-6MC moving cartridge.

My goal is to find a replacement cartridge for the PC-6MC. The table uses a cartridge that weighs between 3 to 8 grams. I know I can use a moving magnet cartridge, but I would like to find an equivalent to the original if possible. If anyone has knowledge of what would be considered a replacement phono cartridge for the PL-707, I would appreciate your help.

In the USA and Canada, the PL 707 didn't have a factory installed cartridge. A low mass, high compliance cartridge is suitable. Why not a Shure M 97xE, Audio-Technica's AT 120E and 440 MLa are great, as is the AT 150 MLx. Ortofon OM 10, 20, or 30 are also recommendable here.

I know the two models for US and Canada did not have a cartridge. I'm just trying to see if I could come close to what the original cartridge was.

Example... If you are restoring an old classic Chevrolet, Ford, or Mopar, you want your engine and transmission to be from the same time period, or as close to the original as possible.

This is what I am attempting to do with the PL-707. I thought that some of you would have an idea as to what the equivalent cartridge would be. If I am unable to find the cartridge, then I will use one of the cartridges you listed.

If anyone would know the equivalent moving coil cartridge, I would appreciate your help. :music:

Probably the only new cart offerings today in hi-out MC design would be the Dyna 10X5, Denon 110, and the Benz Silver.

As far as sound quality or soundstage, which of those would be closest to original, I have no idea.

The DL-110 would have been installed by some owners. That would be a period correct HOMC this turntable could have been used with when new. Component turntables didn't have any one cartridge installed on them when bought. This is not like a musclecar. It could have been paired with a lot of different equipment from different era. Separate components were mix and match. A lot of people did that.

Actually, that table was offered with the cart he is seeking relative info on.

You are still missing my point. I know the US and Canada models did not come with a cartridge, and the buyers picked and chosen the cartridge of their choice. I totally understand. The other markets were provided with the PC-6MC cartridge. You are failing to realize that I would like to find this cartridge or the equivalent cartridge that would work.

According to the specs, the cartridge must weigh between 3 to 8 grams. I'm not sure what type of headshell would be on this table, and would this limit the availability of a cartridge.

BTW... To my knowledge this table was not advertised on BT for sale.

The Pioneer PL 707 does not appear to take a standard headshell. This is a low mass arm, so my suggestions will apply. This tonearm takes an unusual headshell which is proprietary and not standard.

Your welcome. I would still suggest you try the Denon DL-301 Mk. II on that TT as I think it would work well. In that era you would have probably been looking at an earlier variation of the same cartridge like the DL-80. I have run the DL-301 on a lower mass tonearm with the XPS-1 and it was a good match.
