Replacement for Dynaudio D28AF Tweeter

Does anyone have any recommendations for replacing a Dynaudio D28AF tweeter? The tweeters in my Thiel CS3.5 speakers have developed some distortion. I am not sure if the voice coil is blown, needs the ferrofluid replaced, or if the dimples in the dome are causing this distortion. A Google search doesn't turn up much in the way of replacements for these drivers. I am attempting to locate a reasonably-priced replacement with comparable performance. So far, the searches have come up with a pair of Morel "acoustically matched" drivers, model number ET-338. I found one review for these which was positive, but these are quite expensive for replacement parts ($360/pair). The Dynaudio D28AF came as factory-installed equipment on several "high-end" speakers from Thiel and others. I do have a set of Thiel CS2 that uses the same tweeter. I will most likely pull those and put them in the CS3.5 speakers to keep them original. I will need something comparable to replace the ones I remove from the CS2 set.

Any advice and/or suggestions will be appreciated.

Do look into SEAS types or Morel, like the older MD-25 or 40 tweeters. They sound incredible good and are relatively inexpensive! It would be my solution and has been too!

Those Dynaudio tweeters are great, and very expensive.
The "Angelica's" speakers I found at a GW have them, one blew shortly after I got them home. Luckily an AKer had a pair, second generation that are better, and they are singing beautifully.

I hae used the 29's several times in custom builds mostly, once as a replacement driver.
The 29's almost sounds as good as a 40, but does not have the "Hex" wire voice coils, If you ca find a Morel with hex wire wound voice coil, then you are in the better quality Morel. They make soe incredible sounding tweeters and other drivers.

I had to replace the tweeters in my mission's and I used the morel cat308. Really nice tweeters.
 
Jim Thiel was a gifted speaker engineer and it would be would be best to keep the speaker as true to his design as possible. One of my Thiel CS2s blew a tweeter about a year ago and I purchased a used pair from a seller on Ebay.
The replacement worked great and I put the other in away as a spare.
Dynaudio D28AF tweeters show up pretty regularly on Ebay. Check the completed listings.
 
I do not know of a better .75" dome around! Another brand, all be it not cheap, but is very good sounding are the Focal inverted dome types. If you consider something out side a dome, then Fostex Alesis are highly regarded.
Parts Express and Madisound are eat play grounds to took at.

Morel was once considered the poor man's Dynaudio. I'd say they're still awfully close in "voicing." They'd be my pick.

Hi David, I have a pair of D-28AF in good working order and in very good cosmetic shape if you still interested.
 
I really appreciate all the replies to this posting. I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia right after I started this thread. I am concerned about buying used replacement D28 drivers because of the ferrofluid issue. Depending on the age of the driver, there is a strong possibility of the fluid being in need of replacement. As the fluid starts drying out, the performance (sound quality) will start to suffer. I have not had the time to swap the tweeters out between my CS2.2 and the CS3.5 yet. In fact, I may try the Morel tweeter first. I also found another tweeter that has excellent reviews and picked up a set to try. These are the Dynavox TD2801XL. The specifications are almost identical to the Dynaudio D28AF. Anyone have any experience with these?

The diameter of the faceplate on the Morel clones are 104mm compared to 110mm on the D28AF.

The Morel ET338 has a 110mm diameter faceplate but has a higher sensitivity and would require redesigning the crossover..

Well, with all the fitment issues, maybe I should try to replace the ferrofluid on the ones I already have.
 
Thanks for the suggestion Stimpy...I'll check the Daytons out. Would like to have the OEM if I can get it...only need one! Was playing Led Zeppelin II when it happened. So if anybody else out there has a D-28 available would love to hear from you.
