Replacement for KEF NT19 tweeter?

I just picked up a pair of KEF Q-50's, and one of the tweeters is fried (VC reads open). It's NT19 SP1272. Apparently they're NLA. Anybody know if there are replacements out there? I know I can get a used one for about $80 on the 'bay. I'd rather not spend that much on speakers I got for free--I don't even know if I like 'em yet!

Hey man, belated THANKS for the links! I can't do the repair described in the video since my voice coil is burnt, but that thread had a link to some cheap replacement diaphragms. Ordered!

What are replacement diaphragms - do you have a link?

I have my eye on some Q80's with a potentially bung tweeter. They use the NT25. I have repaired some of these tweeters before, but just in case......

I'm the one that posted replacing the NT19 diaphragms. I looked into NT25 replacement diaphragms, but everything I found was 8ohm, when 4ohm is needed. The only possible source for a 25mm 4ohm diaphragm I've found was this audax tweeter.

You'll have to carefully remove the diaphragm, making sure not to cut the leads under that black goop.

How did you go with your repair - did it work?

I think if I cant find the correct impedance diaphragm - I will put in a compensating resistor circuit - its only for the tweeter after all.....

I scored a pair of C80's and suspect I will need to do this operation.

Cheers

Yes, been working ever since no issues.

VICTORY! New diaphragms fit nicely and sound good. Wish I had a stock tweet to compare to, but for the price? 10/10

I just got a pair of Q65.2 towers for a reasonable prince. I wasn't able to test them, but they were in good physical condition. Got them home only to find that both tweeters were dead. I thought at first it might have been due to gummed up ferro fluid, so I pulled the mid/tweet and tested with the Ohm meter. I used your link above to order new diaphragms. Did your NT19 have or use ferro fluid? I didn't see any mention in this thread concerning that step.

I have a pair of Q15.2 which I believe are from the same series as your towers. They did have ferro fluid, but one of them only had half as much fluid as the other, really weird, likely just poor QC.

I wrecked two NT19’s tonight. Was hoping I could replace the ferrofluid. Instead I’ve got one former pulled away from the dome, and the other has one wire broken off right against the former and I can’t find an end to solder to... grrrr. @grandpaslab, you didn’t happen to order a 10 pack of those domes did you? I find these on eBay but coming from China in a covid world, who knows how long they’ll take to get here...?

Anybody got a spare pair they’d sell?

I purchased a 10 pack of these domes. They are not a perfect fit as the voice coil is about a 16th of an inch to short and does not descend far enough into the magnet structure. I have a plan to modify the plastics that hold the magnet so the gap will move up into the right position which will allow me to use these replacement diaphragms. This involves Precisely machining the plastic that holds the magnet with a fly cutter. I have a lot of other projects to get to first but I believe this will work.
