Greetings fellow akers, I'm in need of a inexpensive headshell and cartridge setup, for the yamaha px3. Looking for inexpensive to just get some testing done, then I'llpick out the keeper and Iinvest in quality, thank you all.

As I recall when I had a PX-3 many years ago (got it when it was only a few months old) the OEM headshell was similar to the common Technics and Audio-Technica headshells but without the finger lift. For spares I just picked up a couple of these common ones and left the finger lifts on. I happen to love the Grado sound. You can always buy one of their more modestly priced cartridges from the Prestige series and upgrade the stylus down the road. If you prefer the Audio Technica sound members here rave about the AT-95E which is very affordable. It also can be upgraded by upgrading the stylus. A lot depends on how much you want to spend. Some sellers even sell cartridges premounted to universal headshells.

Hey Balifly, the AT headshell just might work if it will fit the receptacle of the tonearm on these tables. Hard to say from the pictures, but bigtuna may be able to return it if it does not since it's Amazon. The Stanton does not appear to have any plug at the back-end, so doubt that would work because the OP says he has neither cart nor headshell.....so, would need some sort of plug at the back of the headshell that can be put into the tonearm receptacle (P-mount) and then tightened down with the nut on the end of it. Bon voyage, tuna, I really love my PX-3 even though it's in my "B" system and doesn't get near the play-time that my Notts does.....you will have a fine TT (or several!!!) once you are done.....

Thanks everone looks like I'm going w/ the AT setup, ordering from home depot. Lol. I work there. Can return without any B.S. If there is any . Thanks again everone.

The original PX3 headshell is radically different — I know, I have one.

I wish I had more. Great design, IMO. The mass is concentrated around the periphery to produce great rigidity without increasing total mass. Also has a little threaded "bar" across the top for the mounting screws — a very useful 'sightline' for keeping the cartridge square in the h'shell. And it looks super sexy in any arm (again IMO)

But the most important thing: it doesn't matter. You can use any SME-type 'universal' h'shell in that arm. So just get a good one (the TT deserves it), and "good" doesn't mean $$$.

I'll prolly stick with the at a95e. But will not be buying from h.d.. it's to exp. Twice the price. Yes I'm sure it deserves the best.20170220_204555.jpg

I bought a couple SME style Chinese headshells. They work fine. They're a couple grams lighter than the 8g PX headshells which is helpful with higher compliance carts.
They were like seven bucks each.

I'll prolly get something that's already here. Nothing against the high quality Chinese stuff, I just hate waitin 6 wks. To get it.

Here is a better picture of the Stanton headshell, the extra long screw slots will be handy for Baerwald cartridge alignment protractor usage. :music:

Should be available locally.

OK new cart should be here tu. AT95e. Head shell, cart, sty. I'll be on vac. Next WK. Got 2 px3s, and 1 px2. All cleaned up and ready to test. I'll be honest, I'm pretty jacked.

20170228_120356.jpg OK, this came today , it's what you get from wally world, free shipping.....Holy crap, this px3 actually functions 100%. And sound sounds amazing, auto functions seem to work well, very smoothe. And this table actually cleaned up really nice. This is the one I'm planning on keeping. Have 2 more to test this aft. With this same cart. Px2, and px3, will report back later, love this at95e , and this Yamaha table is really nice. .....20170228_120356.jpg

OK , 2 outa 3 aint bad. Both px3s are playing awesome, the px2 seems to not want to set down completely , anyway above my pay grade, I'll prob. Use the feet off it . And part out the rest. But really very happy with the px3s........cheers

Boy! You surrender easily. I encourage you to clarify on the behavior. Many problem are easily solved! Doesn't sound like a big problem if it's initiating set down but not completing it.
Plus, the PX2 feet are different (although you might be able to re-tap the holes)

EDIT: and if you part it out, I need a control button!

Ya just now figured out the feet do not interchange. Well I guess for now maybe just put it on the back burner, if I Decide to part out, I'll let you know.

Oh on the px2, when you auto start it moves over towards the record but stops about 1/8th" from the edge.

And if you give the tonearm "carriage" a little push to the left, does it set down and start playing?
If so, probably the common belt slippage issue which is well documented in this community.
Also, the PX-2&3 tonearm assemblies are interchangeable. (hint-hint)
If it stops and drops before reaching the record's edge, it is a very simple adjustment.

Stops short of the record but doesn't drop, didn't try to force it to the left. May give it another cracked tomorrow.i appreciate your wisdom, very new to the linear tracking units,. I will investigate in more detail. Thank you.
