Replacement Horn tweeters for Sansui SP-3500?

Hi gang - I picked up a pair of Sansui SP-3500s over the weekend. The big horn tweeters (Sansui S-106s) are shot and don't work. I'm not finding a ton of them on eBay right now, and was wondering if any of the other Sansui horns would work - a Sansui T-149 is also 12 ohm, 40 watt and appears to be of similar dimensions, and far more plentiful. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

I'm pretty darned familiar with the 3500's, and I do not know. I've got a HUGE thread here on a pair of 3500's I did a frame off restoration on and from what I know, I'm not convinced anyone will have that information. I would suggest replacing them with what you've got in there. They may or may not be similar enough to work properly. And, if and when you go to sell them, this will hurt your bottom line.

I'm going to assume you disconnected them from the crossover and checked them with your multi-meter. That's too bad, but it happens. I'm sure it won't be long until you get them back up and working properly.

Thanks Biggles. I did pull them off and checked them with a multi-meter, and they're DOA. I may just keep looking and then add them on at a later date, when I'm able to find a pair. I'm doing a bit of a frame-off as well, and it would be nice to do it all at once, but they are pretty easily accessible so it's not a big deal to do it later on as well. I'll look for your restoration thread for some tips!
 
Well, you're right - a helpful subscriber saw my post and is hooking me up as I write! And man, that thread is long, but a gold mine! Thanks for the link - I started reading, but have to take my dogs for a walk, so will continue later. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
 
YUP, and that's the Karma right there pally boy. This will all be taken care of in short order.

Uh, yeah. My threads tend to have tons of blather. However, tucked in there is actually quite a bit of useful information. One such tidbit is how to get the crossover circuit board separated from the binding post cups so you can replace the capacitors properly.

I figured that one out - but I have been reading your description of the stripping and refinishing process with great interest. Mine seem to be in a bit better shape (except for the bottoms, which appear to have been dragged behind a car at some point in their life). I still intend to do a sand-down and refinish while I have them all apart.
 
The 3500's were the most tedious restoration that I've done to date. Around the fronts have so many different angles and tight corners to make right, it is not an easy project. I attempted using stripper on the old, failing lacquer. But found it was easier to pop 100 grit on my finishing sander and take care of it that way. Liquid stripper can be darned near impossible to get out of tight cracks and seams. If you leave any behind, it'll cause your finishing product to fail.

I fully recognize that this thread is pretty old, but I'm running out of ideas!

I just purchased a set of SP3500's and have discovered that both horns are bad, and both midrange drivers in one are bad. Does anyone know if these are rebuildable? Are diaphragms available for the horns? Are reconing kits available for the midrange drivers?

Any info anyone might have would be appreciated.

I would say your best bet is just watching ePray for the parts, or using PartsExpress for replacements (YMMV). The mids should be the same as in the 1700/2500, so that might make them easier to find.

Very worthy speakers, I absolutely love mine.
 
Thanks for the advice. I want to like them, but I'm off to a bad start. I'm hoping to stay all original, or worst case, use substitutes that don't require modifying the boxes so they can be converted back. Any ideas or recommendations on replacements for the midrange horns?
 
Thanks for the courtesy. I have been in contact with them, but it doesn't look like he has them right now. I have found two of the S104's that I need, and there are a pair of the S106's on WeBay, but I think they want a little too much for them. May go with an inexpensive horn from PE for now.
 
Not sure how long youve been looking, but ebay is really the way to go. Or pay the 25 bux and get on barter town here and ask. Take it from me, buying some cheap non original drivers are a complete waste of money, and time. Youll get disillusioned and move on. Stay the course!

Well, I went ahead and spent a few bucks and picked up a pair of horns from PE, installed the "new" S104's, and recapped the crossovers. Just now fired them up. Sounding pretty good! Not sure there's so many negative comments around about them. Going to keep my eyes open for a set of horns (reasonably priced), but in the mean time, they're pretty good.
 
If the horns take a conventional voice coil (ie, they arent piezo) I'd pull them apart (after checking continuity with a meter) and look for generic replacement diaphragms on ePay or aliexpress.

Hey Alan,

I'm tied up right now, but I'll try to figure out what I got and give you the info. They were nothing special, but the mounting holes were very close so I didn't have to modify the cabinets in any way. Hopefully, I'll find an original pair someday.

So, I ended up using these inexpensive horns from PE. Certainly nothing special, but they actually sounded better than I expected (listening to them right now). Best of luck!
