replacement parts and substitutions

Just looking for some general "rules of thumb" ... quite a newbie here.

How important is finding replacement components (such as capacitors) that are audio quality? Do you have recommended vendors for finding these?

Do you have any preferred places to shop for components in general? (RIP Radioshack...)

As for components....what are your opinions on replacements for tantalums? (I know I can stick with tantalum, but if I opt not to, what would you recommend?

When you get into the de/soldering of old PCBs...what are your preferred temps, solder compositions, etc?



Back story: I'm rebuilding a Pioneer SX 737 right now, with the hopes of one day attempting my Realistic STA-2080. I love the quality of this type of listening, but I know I'm on borrowed time with some of the components within the equipment. The SX-737 has a sound issue, but I'm in the works of addressing that.

Any and all advice, pro tips, whatever ya got...I welcome it!

Mouser & Digikey are 2 go to vendors that garner a lot of respect around here.

I wouldn't worry about boutique caps for a receiver tbh, just use good quality caps like Panasonic FC's in the power supply, and Nichicon for the pre, and amp sections. I like to use the next higher voltage for replacements so 63v in place of 50v caps etc, as they can be very close to tolerances in some cheaper product lines, and will give the replacements more longevity.
