16.5 Record Cleaning Machine Mat Replacement:
I need to replace the "Crumby" I mean "Cork" platter mat on my VPI 16.5 RCM!! All it does is attract dirt & dust. Whoever came up with that idea deserves the brain-fart of the year award! I'm sure there are plenty of people here that have ditched the cork. I would appreciate your suggestions, Bob

Hello Bob, Attached are a few pics of my VPI 16.5.
I agree, the Cork Mat could've been improved upon, with probably no additional cost to, or from the manufacturer.

I went with a smooth, non-porous Neoprene Sheet, about 1/16" thick, and it's worked perfectly.

I have a lengthy article about the installation over at Osage Audio, the maker of AIVS Cleaning Fluids. Let me find the link, and I'll come back, and post it.

Would be a sin and as well, a whole lot of money, placing a $60 Herbies Mat, for use on an RCM. As well, I'm not so sure this material is totally non-porous? I'm gathering that it is not, and sort of resembles the open cell porosity of Shelf Liner Material

Some place additional Mats, use Shelf Liner, and other various materials I reckon. I didn't want to go through extra hassles putting on, and yanking off additional sheets of whatever. The Neoprene will be resistant to any chemical you throw at it. Doubtful any RCF Concoction, whether commerical, or DIY could ever harm it, and can never soak in-through.

The Neoprene cleans lickety split, a wipe with a towel, paper towel, and you're good to go. It is easy to clean, and as well very easy to identify any dust, dirt, fluids, etc.

I know places like McMaster Carr sell various grades of rubber sheeting. I went with some from them, was adhesive backed, and all, but I was not happy with the particular material I bought, and was able to find some sheeting locally. Mark
