Anyone that's opened an old receiver or other electronics has probably seen this. They sometimes use a spongy foam material to hold certain pieces in place but still to keep them separate. When aged, this stuff just disintegrates when disturbed. I'm cleaning out an AKAI AA-1050 and it has brown foam pads in several places* and is just falling apart. So I'd like to replace it with something suitable, but have no idea what to use or where to look.
I have some melamine sponges (ie. magic erasers) I was considering cutting up and using, but not sure how they'd hold up over time and exposed to regular heating. Also, was thinking the original dark sponge material would be less likely to be obvious from the outside than these white melamine sponges.
Another I was considering was that cheap weatherstriping foam material (though I don't have any on hand) that has adhesive already on one side so you just have to stick it in place.
Any suggestions?
*spots include: around faceplate lamps, against VU meters, in spots on the case top.
