Replacing equipment, looking for help

I am looking to replace some of my stereo equipment because something in the chain is not working correctly, I currently have a Realistic LAB-2100 turntable, running into a Realistic STA-2290 stereo receiver, into Sansui SP-1200 speakers. The first couple of times I tested this setup, everything worked fine, but one day I fired everything up and no sound would come out of the speakers. The turntable seems to work fine, as a tiny bit of sound comes out of that, and the stereo turns on, but that's as much as I can tell.

Do you guys have any idea what could be wrong? My best guess is there's something up with the receiver, but I don't have enough technical know-how to be able to open it up and diagnose, nor do I have any other speakers to test it with. Before I buy any new equipment, I'd like to know for sure which component is actually busted. Any and all suggestions welcome!

This is an appropriate thread for your question. I have little knowledge of specific receivers. However, there are a number of AK'rs who have working knowledge of your receiver. I'm certain they'll be of assistance.

First thing, does your receiver have fuses? Not likely your turntable or speakers are broken. Most likely something in the receiver. After fuses, I’m a complete idiot on things, so the experts will have to chime in.

Check the position of the tape monitor switch (dubbing switch as well if it has one). That has happened to many people, the switch in the wrong position and no sound.

First off welcome to AK!!,

Secondly tell us more about your receiver in particular how long have you owned it?, has it been serviced recently? has it ever been serviced to your knowledge?

Based on images of your unit from the web it looks like it has multiple different buttons for I'm assuming multiple different features.

As @goodolpg mentions, there's a possibility you might have a button engaged or disengaged that shouldn't be.

If you have an instruction/owners manual maybe got through that to see if there is a trouble shooting section. If you don't have a manual you can find one here* (it's free)

One last thing double check that your Pre-Out/Main In jacks are present as that can cause no sound

signal can get stuck in switches and stuff. The Idiot's Guide to Using DeOxit (revisited) | Audiokarma Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums talks about cleaning the controls and switches.

Do you have any other gear to test with? The preamp output/power amp input on the receiver allows some diagnostics if you have other gear.

Try FM. If no sound, problem (which I suspect) is receiver. Is muting switch on? Sound would be faint if so. Start by verifying it's passing sound from another source. Have a CD player you can hook up??
