Replacing Marantz 2385 balance slider switch

Does anybody know if balance a slider switch from other Marantz receiver models are the same as that used in a 2385? My 2385 slider has broken off and I like to replace it. Just wondering if I could get one from another receiver and it would be the same fit, spec. etc.

You're going to have to be careful here, at it appears that there's no consistency in the resistance value of this control across different Marantz models. On your receiver, it's 250K ohms, but I saw anywhere from 50K to 500K when I looked at others with a balance slider.

How is the vintage market in Vietnam? In So Cal, there are more than a few Vietnamese who buy vintage gear and export home. They tell me the Vietnamese love anything American made and are not so enamored of Japanese stuff. The like U.S. Marantz but not Japanese Marantz.

As far as I know, the only ones to share the exact same spec balance slider are the 2385, 2500 and 2600. It's ok to use a slider from a higher powered unit, but not one from a lower powered unit to a higher powered unit, I think. :scratch2:

I've only been to Ho Chi Minh City a couple times and didn't go looking for audio gear. Here in Phnom Penh there's nothing to get excited about. It's all 80's and 90's era low end Japanese stuff. I've stopped looking in the shops here after not finding anything worthwhile. Bangkok on the other hand has a great used shop called Mr. Balance on the top floor of Pantip Plaza, an electronics mall, that is floor to ceiling with some amazing gear. The Chinese guy who owns it is gruff, doesn't bargain, and really isn't interested in you until you wave a stack of Baht in front of his face. You literally have to squeeze through the stacks to see everything. It would be a great place to film a movie. He's got some 70s era Marantz and other gear that he wanted laughable (to me) prices for. But it is super rare in this part of Asia and somebody will probably pay what he's asking at some point. I bought a pair of Yamaha MSP5 powered monitors from him that I use with my computer/iPod music files. They are quite nice and detailed for near field listening.

My Vietnamese buyer told me he could sell a 1,000 Bose 301's if only he could get them, LOL.

BTW, I have a pair of MSP3's and they sound great. I wish I could find a pair of MSP7's. Could use a little more bass but I'm not unhappy with the 3's, they make sampling music on YT a joy.

Back on topic, I replaced a 2500 slider a few moons ago. It had a plastic wire connector. Not a difficult swap although IIRC, some care has to be taken with the LED's. The 2385 has a similar arrangement.

If your balance pot is still working it might be easier to attempt to repair the slider than to find a replacement. My 2385 needs the whole pot which has been bypassed and I no longer have the balance feature but the output is evenly balanced and it isn't necessary to adjust it. I tried tracking down that part for a while and, much like hen's teeth or frog's hair, they are very hard to locate.
Good luck

Can't you just replace the slider itself by using a donor off any another model with the same length slider. Just the part with the shaft on it .

Take the control apart and swap the shaft , it just rides on top of the pad so value would not matter right .

IIRC there is a small ball bearing , so don't loose it , you just bend the tabs up and remove the slider .

I have done this in the past to repair a snapped shaft and not wanting to unsolder the wires just replace the broken part using another control .

But have to say in fairness never on a 2385 .
