Replacing Shure NB-71 stylus on an old TT (Akai AP-D2)

First post. I have a humble hand-me-down Akai AP-D2 (from a family friend who didn't have any info about it) that I'm trying to get working. It has a Shure MT100E cartridge and Shure NB-71 stylus that I'm looking to replace.

The Akai owner's manual provides the replacement stylus type (RS-85), but for the cartridge, it just says moving magnet type. The replacement stylus for this particular Shure cartridge would be a Shure N75B Type 2 stylus, if I'm not mistaken based on looking it up online. Should I be looking for a stylus relative to the Shure cartridge/stylus it has or should I follow the TT owner's manual?

Any info/advice about this old Shure cartridge or generally about replacing an old table's cartridge versus stylus would be greatly appreciated!

The AKAI RS-85 is a rebadged Audio Technica old style AT95E. You can get a cartridge like that or a stylus for the Shure. There's no compelling reason to get the original so I would just go with price.

Affordable Shure branded styli are non existent and an inexpensive aftermarket one is likely inferior; though good ones exist, they aren't really cheap. The current AT cartridge will probably be your best bet.

That Shure has a wide range of stylus options. A N75 EJ or ED from Jico would be worth considering.

Great advice, I appreciate it. I’ve had my eye on the AT95E, but it seems that cartridge is out of production right now… there might be a newer model that I’m not aware of. Going with price, since I’m able to find a JICO replacement stylus for under $50, I think I’m going to try that first.
