Replacing transistors in 2226B

Hi!

Im looking to replace the transistors in my 2226B, that has a lot of popping and noise in the left channel. After switching the pre-out/main-in, the noise switches to the right channel, so it has to be in the pre-amp board I guess. As stated in a previous tread, all the knobs on the front panel started acting up at the same time, and cleaning the pots did not help.

So Im looking to replace the transistors on this board. I do not own a multimeter. I guess I would have to desolder the transistors to test them anyways? Im not sure if the top or bottom transistors on this schematic are for the left channel. I only need to replace them right?

Or are there cheaper replacements that wont effect the audio quality?

I may be mistaken, but you may want to try to match hfe for the replacement transistor pairs for best results. Those with more experience on this unit can confirm. You will need a multimeter or parts tester to do this (can be had for not too much $ - look for LCR-T4 on the auction site)
 
Might be a good place for some freeze spray testing of suspect components. Also, please don't buy transistors on eBay. It is full of counterfeit transistors. Good subs are 2SC1681-->KSC1845FTA and 2SA841-->KSA992FBU. Get them from Mouser or Digikey. They are trusted sources. But......I'm not a big fan of wholesale transistor replacement. Find the bad part or parts if possible (start with Tom's cap suspicions), and use the shotgun method as a last resort.
 
Mouser and Digikey are out of KSA992FBU. Won't be in until October ...
Looks like they're moving production to a new factory.

What's the difference between the FBU and the FBTA?
Is it just the leg bending thing?
