Looking for recommendations for a shop to take a preamp for repair and an amp for a checkout (it's been 10 years or more since they saw any current!). Milwaukee or Madison area preferred, but will drive or ship to a place where you experts might give high marks to... Thanks!

I had a good experience with John @ VanL Speakerworks.
North side of Chicago might mot be close enough for you though.
Rather than ship it all, I drove my equipment 5 hours to his place!

They completely checked out everything, plus did a restore on my amp. The capacitors were most definetely leaking.
John also restores/rebuilds speakers. One of mine was damaged. John did an amazing job fixing it.

I have had good luck at Sound World in Wausau Wi. Got my old Pioneer SX-1250 up and running sounding great.

I wasn't aware of hifi-haus. Interesting. I have used sounds classic in rockford a few times with good success.

Sounds Classic must be a relatively new name for the shop that is at 5-points in RKFD? I took my Apt Holman there years ago for an issue - and that issue has returned. I'm leery of going back there unless it has changed hands...

Same owner. Also known as Video Lab. I've bought and sold items to owner Mark. He did a minor repair to a tonearm on TT, I bought from him. Only repair.

I have only heard good things about Mark.
How can you hold someone accountable for an issue that returned after you had it repaired "years ago"?

I've also used Sounds Classic. I didn't have any problems with the quality of his work, but there have sometimes been other issues. With a power amp I took in he did a good job and finished fairly quickly, but with a reel to reel he took forever to finish the job and was not very responsive to my messages. It seemed like every time I talked to him he would tell me it was next on his list, but then I'd call again and something else had taken priority. His original (long) estimate of 3 months turned into over 8. Maybe just don't take him a tape machine. It seemed like he was avoiding it.

If anyone has a Revox A77 that needs work, A friend is an expert in these if you're local enough to bring it to him in WI. Great dude and arguably an expert in that specific machine.

the ones i've worked on are very complex and does take some time to fix.

if i had a reel to reel i wanted fixed, i wouldn't post that in the general audio discussion but in the tape forum.
