I've just a little console pull from the late 50s with the original Mullards and the owner's handbook. The tubes are still good, but the handbook says that they are guaranteed for 3 months! Did the tube manufacturers perhaps want to sell more tubes?

Well I have it back and am listening to Jazz for the Evening.
I have it hooked up to a set of Grundig Box 650 that I bought from a fellow Ak'er.
He never butchered the unit at all, the speaker terminal he rescued from another philips unit that he had, he screwed them in from the back preserving the original ones, he said he didnt want to butcher anything just incase in the future I should come across original parts. This way all he has to do is remove whet he done and it will be original again.
He did the same for the RCA inputs, he put rca cords attached directly into the unit through the vent holes, to be removed if I should come accross originals. Unit was cleaned and checked thoughly.
He did say that the output tubes were pretty shot so he replaced them with others that he had, if they were the originals or not I didnt ask, I was just glad to get it home.
I must say while I sit here and listen to it I am very pleased. It has nice sound to it, but I wish it had a touch more treble, I guess the fellow in the article in my first post knew what he was talking about. On the other hand, these Grundigs are kinda flat sounding as well, I think I just need to find the right speaker combination.
Overall for my $40 investment I am happy. :thmbsp:

Well, good for you he choose the lesser evil and didn't butcher the amp.
Getting hold of the original speaker-plugs (DIN Speaker, Male) isn't really a problem.
In my drawer are severel brand new ones; they are still manufactured and sold in Europe.
So are the 5-pin DIN male plugs.
I imagine they should be available in the US as well.
Service-manual attached.

I looked at the schematic and noticed something strange.
C11/C41 Coupling-cap's to the EL95 grids are 3,3nF. That's awfully small cap's. I would suggest 100nf ~ 330nF at least.
Also, of course remove C13/C43 for HIgher-FIdelity.

Great that he got it setup for you without having to butcher it. Hit the auction site or Radio Shack for an input switch box to make life a bit easier. Also, look for a couple of sets of the plugs or plugs to rca adaptors. I am finding the sources for them are drying up and having them will enhance the value, if nothing else. Also, and a craziness unto itself, start looking for some tubes both for a backup set of replacements or tube rolling fun. Were the ones he put in new or pulls from other units which may mean they have been run and not in tip top condition, though they have service life left.
As for the 90 day tube warranty, that was the industry standard. A few equipment makers offered a 1 year warranty but they either had a special agreement with their tube supplier or were absorbing the cost internally. Come to think of it, I wonder what the warranty was on a transistor in those early years from the transistor manufacturer, not the equipment maker.

Jay, eBay encrypts the name of the other bidders so you never know who you are bidding against. I was the same way. If I knew the other bidder, I stopped bidding. You know, it is the privacy thing...
