Rescued these from Sandy...

I found a pair of Spectrum 200 speakers at the curb following hurricane Sandy.

They look like decent speakers. Three ways. Woofers have rubber surrounds and a second name I recognize.

Lets see if anyone can tell who manufactured these before I post the picture that gives it away :D

I can't find a thing on the net about them.

Any ideas?

I don't know but they were trying REALLY hard to knock off the look of a Wharfedale E50...

I am very curious to hear them but, the cabs are soaked. The foam filler was loaded with water (drying now) and I have to test all the drivers after they dry out as well. The caps will have to be changed as well.

Anyone have these?

Are they worth the effort of new cabs?

Those chrome dome tweeters are something I usually see in speakers I don't buy. I'd give them a shot as is and if you like them, dig in. But I would not expect any musical epiphanies.

I thought the same thing Andy...those silver dust caps and that cheesy font made me second guess them but when they said "Wharfedale" I was suprised

It is really odd those are Wharfedales. Seems like a real cheap copy of the E50 which has aluminum cast frame drivers with huge magnets etc. Must have been an attempt at a entry level speaker after the the time of the good vintage stuff.

I thought the same of the cheap stamped frames when I pulled the driver...but they say "Wharfedale" on both :scratch2:

If the cabinets are still in one piece (but soaked), it is possible to dry them out? I mean, they might not be pleasing to the eye, but at least you can audition the drivers in them and see if it's worth building new cabs.

My guess is, if they ARE Wharfedale drivers, then they should sound good. Even cheap Wharfedale speakers are better than some of speakers that people rave about on here.

They seem to have been stacked one on top of the other. One took a big soaking. The other...not too bad.

I pulled both the woofers and the foam stuffing out to do just what you suggested last night.

I'll wait till they are good and dry, check them with my meter and give them a listen :thmbsp:
 
There are different selector knobs on those two speakers - the right hand one looks like two of the knobs from a Sansui jumped over when the storm hit :scratch2:

Those frames are cast not stamped. They are indeed Wharfedales. Good catch. Not my favourite speaker, but very dynamic with excellent clarity. By the bye, Spectrum is a company based in either Hong Kong or Taiwan that was well-known for producing clones of name brand speakers using original drivers sourced from the manufacturer. Those included Dynaco and Rogers and apparently Wharfedale as well.

Wow, ya' learn somethin' new every day...

Really? Those are cast-framed woofers? I know the ones from the late '70's E** series were cast, but something seems weird about the ones in those Spectrums. Anybody have a date on when these were manufactured? I would guess late '70's. I'll have to keep an eye out (If this keeps up, I'll be all out of eyes pretty-soon).

Like someone said, I've never heard a bad-sounding Wharfedale driver. Some were better than others, but still good-sounding (I haven't heard the XP series stuff yet though).

I think the drivers you are referring to are in post #9...

Those indeed are cast frames. The woofers I pulled from the Spectrum's are stamped...check out the second picture in the 1st post?
