Rescuing a Sansui 9090DB

Hello all. A friend of mine gave up on his 9090DB because of the famous problems with the Dolby switch. He had it in his shed for the last ten years. When I first seen it,it was all covered in dust with paint over spray over most of it. I offered $100 and I brought it home. After spending many hours cleaning it, the unit is in amazing cosmetic condition. I am not any kind of a tech. I'm just wanting to clean it up and then get it repaired somewhere, replacing all that is needed. I have the front pretty much torn down, and now I want to take the dark plastic FM dial indicator panel off to clean behind it. Also the two FM meters on the left side look to have some type of trash under the needles. But I can't get the panel off. It seems to be glued.
Would anyone know the trick to getting this off without breaking it? Thanks for any help.

The tuner meters are glued as you found out. All I can say is be careful and take your time using a fresh x-acto blade. Do not pry with too much force.
Once the meters are in your hand you can remove the clear tape and remove the clear front cover and gently blow the dust and debris out.

Best to indicate where you are, there may be a nearby AK'er who could do the job for you.

If the problem is actually dirty meter faces you don't need to remove the tuner scale - and frankly I can't see what benefit you'll get by doing that. The meters do gather some dirt but can be opened as stated above by removing the tape on the meter back and pulling the meter clear for very gentle cleaning/blowing out..

I live just out of Baton Rouge, La.. The reason I want to remove the plastic FM dial indicator to clean is because it looks like I see something behind the panel itself. It kinda looks like mold, but that's just a guess. If I went that far I was going to try and clean out the meters. Thanks for all of the input. It all helps.

Could be, who knows. But I would like to find out and get rid of it. I'm trying to clean it up the best I can and then get it repaired, recapped, etc. My daughter likes the old stuff and it will be a surprise gift/surprise for her.

No, not a this Christmas gift. Bought that already. Because of the big expense I'm expecting on the repair, it will be a next Christmas gift. So have time. As I said, she likes the old stuff when it comes to music, and I'm not ready to part with my 9090DB that she so admires. Bought new in 1977. So this one will be hers.

Very cool. Heirloom gifts are always the best. I was bequeathed a '78 Takamine guitar and an Brazilian Rosewood D-28 Martin from 1969 (since been fully restored).

Nothing comes close to topping that. Thanks, Grandpa.

WOW! that is exceptionally cool...congrats!

and a tip of the hat to your Grandpa
