If I hooked up a pair of small 8 ohm speakers in parallell with a large pair of speakers also 8 ohm at the speaker input terminals of the large speaker would my amp read that as a 4 ohm load? If I hooked small speakers to large speakers at the woofer terminals of the large speaker would it also read 4 ohms? Thanks for any insight.

Yes. Speaker size is irrelevant, as is whether you are making the connection at the speaker or at the amplifier (assuming the resistance of the speaker wire is negligible relative to the resistance of the speakers).

The formula for paralleling is : 1/R1 + 1/R2 = 1/Rtotal . So two 8 ohm speakers in parallel : 1/8 + 1/8 = 1/? = 1/4 ; the total load is 4 ohms.
Say you have two 16 ohm speakers and you add one 8 ohm ...
1/16 + 1/16 + 1/8 = 1/? = 1/4 . The total load is 4 ohms.
