Restore Dirty/Cruddy Old Plastic buttons.

I recently picked up a Pioneer SG-9800 EQ. The internals were super clean, and the Aluminum face is in fairly good condition.

However, the plastic buttons on the sliders and some push buttons we very dirty and had a lot of grim built up on them. I first tried soap and water, then 99% rubbing Alcohol, then a Mr. Clean magic eraser. But the speckled dirt would just not come off. I suspect it might actually be some kind of plastic degradation, as it kind of looked like oxidation.

Anyway, I picked up some NOVUS plastic cleaner/polish and it really helped tidy the plastic up. It comes in #1 light/clean, #2 polish/light scratches/ and #3 heavy scratches.

I first tried #2, and it improved the buttons, but #3 was really able to tidy the plastic buttons up. Here's some pictures showing cleaned and non cleaned buttons.

If you're running into similar issues, you should give this a whirl, worked great for me. Also, the #1 made my acrylic turntable cover sparkle and the #2 really shined up some of the LED acrylic plates on some other components.

Be careful with the #3, it's very abrasive. You're better off with the #2 and either elbow grease or a buffing wheel and light pressure.

I tried bleach once. Huge mistake. The practically glued on crap did come off, but the silver paint got cloudy.

Yes, that is true. I tried for a while with #2, but this stuff wasn't budging. I was not even able to get them fully clean. Anyway, after #3, you go back and polish with #2, so they should turn out pretty good.

But yes - use #3 judiciously.

Mcguires (Sp?) plastic cleaner and polish also do incredibly well at this.

What I find most interesting is the G00GLE ads that appeared at the top of this page on AK. Ads for Novus plastic cleaner and Mr Clean Magic Eraser. Mmmmh....wonder how it knows.....

The Turtle Wax Headlight Lens Restorer kit does a great job on CDs and of course headlight covers. The polishing cream is surprisingly effective.
