Restringing Marantz 2275

I am working on another 2275. I noticed that the pointer goes the wrong direction. When I looked at the Service Manual the dial string "seemed " correct. The dial wraps around the drum from the bottom. There is no way that the pointer will move in the correct direction (to the right) when the tuning capacitor is fully closed (low end) in this configuration. If the dial string comes off the top of the drum it moves in the correct direction. I tried it. Is the Service manual wrong ? Any body have any pictures they could share. Drum pictures and also a picture of the direction of the wrap on the tuning wheel. Thanks

I just went through this on a 2275 that I bought with the dial string laying in the floor of the chassis. I had the same problem you are having when I ran the string according to the SM. I finally fixed it by reversing the three turns on the tuner knob. Look how it enters and leaves the spindle, remove it from the spindle and wind it the opposite way. That fixed mine.

Edit: If it works properly with the string coming off the top of the big pulley, there is no reason not to do it that way. Most Marantz models have the string at the top and there is nothing to interfere with it, so I would say do whichever method seems easier.

Thanks Steve ! I ran it with the dial string coming off the top. I left the wrap around the spindle of tuning wheel the same as I found it. I was courious if the spindle wrap would reverse things. I do know that the tuning capacitor has to be fully closed to be on the low frequencies and as it opens it goes to the higher frequencies. The dial pointer has to match that direction. Left to right as the tuning capacitor opens. Here are some pictures. I don't know if the string locations make it harder to replace the lamps or the plastic lamp housing if it's too melted. This one is in OK shape . IMG_2249.JPG IMG_2248.JPG

This is interesting, because the pulley placement is completely different in my 2275. I thought I would never figure out how to get it strung since I never saw it that way. I ended up with the string on top of the big pulley, but the pulleys next to the tuning knob are completely different on mine. Anyway....after considerable trial and error, I got it all working properly. If the tuning pointer ends up 1/2" or less off of station, I just remove the glue that holds the pointer to the string, slide the pointer where it needs to be and reglue with a couple drops of wood glue.

I got in a 4300 that someone had restrung that worked backwards. I had the similar 4400 model and sure enough, the string was wrapped around the tuning wheel from the wrong side. I just took the two screws out that held in the top bracket and removed the top bearing pieces and rewrapped it. I popped out the gyro wheel and cleaned up the bottom bearing pin and put a dab of fresh synthetic grease on it and on the top bearing pivot upon reassembly.

I never thought that there were different set ups of the same model for the dial string. Here are more pictures of the one I am working on . I do know that the string has to lead off the top of the capacitor drum. The service manual is incorrect. IMG_2251.JPG IMG_2252.JPG

Looks like my 2275 pulley system is the same as Beamer's with the pulley on the bottom of the bracket. Weird how many variants there are. Mine is the European model 2275:

Mine was fine until I changed the led’s and I fudged up! I spent two days messing with it. Then when I finally get it in then I realize the stations don’t match up with the dial. Messed with it for half hr until I finally snapped the cord ‍♂️ Now I guess I’m looking for a replacement . Oh and now that I’m trying to tie the ends together I figure the solution was to remove the pointer and set it where it needed to be and put a drip of glue and presto. Any input on where to get the cord?

I got some string from these guys:

Be sure that you copy the string path that was used originally. Some of the service manuals have the string going the wrong way around the large pulley.
Thank you, as you stated the manual I found shows the string at the bottom and mine had it over the top of the large pulley. I have the one from Hi Fi Engine . Any other manuals out there ?

Wow, mine looks just like this set up, not the dual pulleys on the same arm. How do you know if it’s the Euro version. And do you have a copy of the tech manual for this one ? Thank you

Use braided fishing line, as used for bait casting, cheap & accessible. If dial goes backwards, somewhere the string is crossed up. Visual inspection will usually reveal where, easy fix. Restringing dial cords aren't as hard as most make it out to be. Often, if lacking diagram, just follow the pulleys & such helps to determine where string belongs. Just may need trial & error on number of wraps & orientation on the "twirly shaft" & the drum on tuning cap gang, which is likely where the backward action originates.

Ok, my 2275 is about to become a one station wonder! I’ve been trying this restringing on and off for three days now and it’s driving me to drink! If I use the over the white large pulley it stops at 94.7 fm!

HELP
I hear you. I've done it dozens of times with different receivers and it's still a PITA but here are some pointers for the 2275...

  1. My dial threading diagram from the 2275 service manual is different than yours. Mine rolls the thread around the main cap pulley (drum) from the bottom, yours from the top.
  2. It doesn't matter! Both service manuals suck!
  3. Do what the manual shows but go one extra roll around the drum in either way - once when you enter it (before the spring) and once when you leave it.
  4. Enter the drum and exit it at the same orientation - either top or bottom.
  5. The direction of the 3 turns around the tuning gyro bearing is different if you thread the drum from the bottom, than if you do so from the top. If you get it wrong, your pilot needle will slide the wrong way.
  6. Looking at the front of the receiver: If you thread from the bottom of the drum, the dial cord goes in first from the left of the tuning gyro pivot, i.e. you wind 3 counter clockwise turns. If you thread the drum from the top - you start from the right - meaning clockwise.
  7. You can do this a hundred times - it's still a PITA. Take it easy. No one likes this bit.
