Review of the 'Quest 20' Ortofon/Digitrac

Hey man, I saw you posted this on RM as well, just didn't get a chance to reply yet. From LPgear.com, they don't mention the OM5, but this should roughly answer

Upgradeable Performance
All Super OM models have the same body, construction, and magnetic circuitry. The only difference is the interchangeable stylus unit. Thus, when your level of musical sophistication improves, you can simply switch the existing stylus to the Ortofon Stylus 30 or for pinnacle performance the Ortofon Stylus 40. The Stylus 40 offers pinnacle performance for the most demanding listener.

I think i'm gonna order than OM 20 you sent me the link for yesterday. It's cheaper than the OM 10 i was able to find as well.

Then why bother with the Digitrac? I have an OM20 and 200NE, IMHO the OM20 stylus sounds better and is also of better construction than the Digitrac.

well, this was before when i was going to order a OMB 5E, but the listing is gone now. plus, the OM20 comes with an OM10 stylus, so....

The Digitrac stylus fit my TM14 perfectly once I snapped off the tabs and sounds just fine. It's a tad loose on an OM body however I think a small dot of Blue Tac will tighten it up.

Ah, I assumed it came with an OM20 stylus.

I recall seeing an auction(s) like that and wondered if it was a ploy to up the bidding because some folks might not know the OM10, OM20 etc are all the same body and you'd never know the difference.

Anyone compared the OM cartridge with the integral weight installed and removed?
I was using my Quest 20 last night (weight installed) and it sounded very nice.
Today, got to thinking I might not need that weight on my Yamaha YP-D71, so I removed it.
Re-adjusted, set VTF to 1.8, and I am hearing lots more surface noise. Not what I hoped for.
I will now replace the OM cartridge weight and see if I can get the magic back...

I've played mine both ways. Currently w/o the weight. 1.8 sould do it? Does the surface noise go away at 2 grams?

I re-installed the weight, calibrated the arm to 1.7vtf, and it sounds a little better now.
I may be over-sensitive to surface noise, as I have been using a Denon DL160 for the last 8 months.
Still, I like some aspects of the Quest 20. It is always a hoot to get great performance out of a 'budget' component.

After reading all the nice reviews about the Digitrac 200NE, I wanted to order one for my Super OM10 body...

The guy wants to charge me $25US shipping on a $22US stylus  .... No wonder it's free shipping to the US.

I'll probably be better off ordering a OM30 replacement from JICO.

Hi Skylounger, I'm in Montreal and I still got the Digitrac with free shipping. Did you go through the Jett sales website?

I ordered a couple of these for my Super OM 10 today. Keeping my fingers crossed! No shipping charges were indicated but there was a note saying *shipping charges may be added. I will check in once the cartridges arrive to let fellow Canucks know what to expect.

Edit: The NE200 stylus (OM 20) is a definite upgrade over the OM 10 stylus, correct? I don't know how much use my OEM stylus has seen since I have only had the TT for a few days. I figure that I need spares anyway and the NE200 is even cheaper than the OM 10 replacement stylus. It would be nice to get an upgrade to boot!

Ordered one this weekend for my LM 30, which has a worn suspension on the stylus.

I understand it will fit a tad loose out of box, but plan on addressing that creatively.

Yes it should easily outperform your OM10.

The NE200- is it really an OM 20? How's it compare to an LM 30? Basically on par to an LM 20?

No, the NE200 is not an OM20, both stylus are nude mounted diamonds but the OM20 diamond has probably 30% less mass and is cut with squared off corners where the NE200 a round cut. Both diamonds are clear and look of good quality.

Not long ago I compared the NE200 to an OM20 and thought the OM20 sounded better in terms of overall resolution but not by a whole lot, but I still think the NE200 is still a steal for the price.

Having never heard an OM30, I'd be curious what you think when your NE200 arrives.

Thank you.

Actually, I have an LM 30. But the cantelever is tired, and bottoms out with ease- this on a low mass, carbon fibre ADC arm.

So, I'm going to mount this on an LM 30, and get creative a bit with shimming.
