Revox B710 score..and 500th post?

Hi folks,
Was collecting a pair of ~Kef Reference 105/3 today,when I noticed a Revox B710,in a cabinet. Is it for sale??

Powered it up,counter works but thats all,no tape transport,vu meters or mpx/dolby indicator lamps.:no:

Seeing as I have a B710 with suspect motor bearings,and this guy only had about 10 tapes,I thought it hasnt had a hard life..worth a gamble!:thmbsp:

Oh,and it had the plastic cover for the cassette too,I almost bought one of those for more than £15,glad I waited!
Is it worth re-capping the power supply,or just transfering the tape mechanism to my functioning B710?

Recapping might bring it back to life.

Also beware of the pinch rollers. They might look unused but might have become too hard. Most of the puzzling problems with the B710 can be attributed either to FRAKOs or the pinch rollers.
 
Yeah, sounds like one of the power supply caps shorted.

These are great decks, well worth the effort to fix.

Put an ohm meter across the FRAKO caps and look for a dead short to begin with.

If there are none, check fuses. Then check voltages.

Service manual is free from revox ftp site.

Like SaSi writes, most problems with these decks are caused by Frako caps and bad pinch rollers.

The transports are different between different series. Later MK-IIs had the single block Canon heads, and the electronics need to be modified. Check the serial numbers before doing a transport swap.

The donor deck and my original are both mk1, heads look identical and both low-ish serial numbers so should swap straight over(fingers crossed!)
 
Finished work around midnight,came home and got to work again!
Swapped the transports over,working like a charm!Really pleased :)
£15 well spent!
 
Well done! Excellent score and solution for you! What are you going to do with the remaining deck parts? The FF/REW motors on my B710 need to be rebuilt, so I was looking for a set to work/practice on. Any chance you want to sell your "bad" transport?
 
Perry, a guy in the German Revox forum is machining brand new bearings for these motors. The hardest part is getting the old one's out. I found that threading a sheet metal screw into the bearing and then pulling it straight out works best. Fitting the new bearings is very easy.

I haven't been on that site in a while. Never seemed o be a lot going on there. He's machining new scintered bronze bearings to press in?
 
I wonder WHY someone is going to all that trouble. Revox changed the motor type (They are Portescap motors) to a ball-race model some time during the B215 production. But either ball race or sintered bronze are available off-the-shelf from several bearing suppliers already.

Although they seem to be back ordered a lot. :sigh:

I find it interesting that there is enough load on the bearing to wear it oblong to begin with, but I have had a few that simply had a LOT of slop in them.
