Revox G36 vacuum tube order

Does anyone tell me the order of vacuum tubes for the Revox G36? It would seem the type of tubes and order in which they were inserted would be in either the service manual or the Owner's manual. All I can find is V1 through V12 in the service manual. The labeling on the original tubes are worn of some of my tubes, and the heat shields I cannot get off. Thanks for any help.

Hi Stratcat23,

From the information I have on the beast........

V 1 ECC83 Double Triode
V 2 ECC81 Double Triode
V 3 ECC81 Double Triode
V 4 ECC81 Double Triode
V 5 ECC81 Double Triode
V 6 ECC83 Double Triode
V 7 ECL86 Triode-Pentode
V 8 ECL86 Triode-Pentode
V 9 ECC83 Double Triode
V10 ECC83 Double Triode
V11 ECC83 Double Triode
V12 ECC82 Double Triode

Looking from the back of the chassis (i think), They are numbered 1 to 11 going from left to right. V7 and V8 are taller than the others as they are higher power (ish) tubes for the Audio Amp. V12 is in the top left hand corner and the top of the tube should be facing you. V12 is the Bias Oscillator.

The difference between the 81, 82 and 83 tubes needs to be known as the parameters for the triodes is different.

Also, some of the tubes should be considered as pairs. If only one is replaced there may be level differences between the two channels.

Hope this helps. I am a tad green if the recorder is in good knick and comes to life OK. The valves will make a difference to the overall sound. My main amplifier is a tube one.

keep us posted.

Not sure where I got it, but I can send the entire manual if it helps. Since revox was originally based in Switzerland, makes sense that it would be in French (and German)

That might help. I read a little French. I wonder why this wasn’t in the English manual? Thank you

It turns out the PDF is from HiFi Engine. It's too large to post here, so you'll want to go there to download it yourself (if you have an account—they're not accepting any new users, unfortunately...) The name of the document is:

I appreciate it. I’m already a member.
The HiFi engine manual is quite good, it should help out a lot. Revox manuals seem to have a bunch of different iterations on the internet...
Mine has a sticker top right that shows tube order. Good luck, they are such beautiful machines IMO, they just have that 'look' when the lights are on. :thumbsup:IMG_6265.jpg

Mine doesn't have the sticker. Probably long gone.

Hi Straycat23,

had a peruse of the circuit to check for the "pairs".

V3 and V4 are a pair. These valves follow S6a and both Triodes in the valve are used in a single channel.

V9 and V11 are a pair. These tubes are in the final stages of the Head Amps. Again, both Triodes in the valve are used in a single channel.

V7 and V8 are a pair. They are the Push Pull Pentodes for the Speaker Amp. Imbalance here will give distortion.

Bear in mind that this is purely "my opinion" and I am seeking to get the best performance from the machine. Level issues may be adjusted out but the noise figures will be higher on the lower gain tube and may fail the spec. This is a quality machine and needs to be treated with the respect it deserves. I have 2 Revox C270 machines (4 Track LS and 2 Track HS). The quality of the reproduction on these machines has me grinning on a regular basis.

I hope you get the same enjoyment from your machine(s).

Cheers

Thank you for the information. I'm replacing all my old Philips tubes today. I'm hoping the new tubes will give me some sound. I'll have to run the Revox through my preamp; however, as I do not have an intact onboard speaker.
