RF-5 vs CF-2

Hello fellow Klipsch fans,

I have been working my way up the Klipsch line up for the last couple of years, with the progression as follows: KG3.5 => KG4 => KG5.2 => Quartets => Epic CF-1.

When I had the CF-1s side by side with the Quartets, I found I preferred the clean, detailed, and accurate sound (not to mention sub-bass) of the Epic series over the excited sound of the (extended) heritage.

From this, I set my targets for a pair of CF-2s for my next pair of Klipsch speakers. After about 6 months of watching Craigslist, no CF-2 have come up for sale locally. However, a pair of Reference series RF-5s have come up at what I consider a decent price.

On paper, these speakers seem similar. Both are two-way designs using 8-inch woofers. The RF-5 are rated to be 1db more efficient (99 vs 98) with slightly extended bass response (34hz vs 36hz cutoff). The RF-5 used a 1-inch titanium diaphragm compression driver, while the CF-2 uses a 2-inch aluminum diaphragm compression driver. The CF-2s are about 20 pounds heavier than the RF-5, use neodymium magnets for the drivers, and cost a little more new ($1600 in the mid 90s compared to $1500 in the mid-2000s).

Does anybody have experience with both of these speakers? Any thoughts on whether I should jump on the RF-5 or hold out for some larger Epics or Legends?

My listening room is about 15'x12', carpeted with 8 foot ceilings (so I don't need a lot of power to drive the room). I generally listen to acoustic music (folk, bluegrass, jazz, or anything that is well recorded without a lot of distortion)

Thanks!

RF-5 is one of the most under rated Reference Speakers ever, IMO. Give them a high current amp and they'll pound. Top end is not harsh at all. Great speaker.

I am not familiar with the RF-5 but I have experience with the CF-2 and CF-3s. I have restored both crossovers as well. Unfortunately the CF-2 is good, maybe a bit better than good but the CF-3 is in a different league. The CF-3s can power a night club, very impressive and loud speaker. Massive bass. While I love my CF-2s, the CF-3s are some real bangers.

I have a set of RF-5's and as mentioned above they are are a great speaker. I have not owned the CF2 but have owned the CF4 so that comparison is not a fair fight. I really liked the RF5's almost as much as my Chorus 1's. I would say if you can get these south of 500 go for it, you could always sell them later if you find the CF2's to compare.

Thanks for all of the input guys! I actually ended up finding a pair of KLF-20s that came up for sale locally, so I passed of the pair of RF-5s that I was watching.

The KLF-20s are a very fun speaker! Efficient and exciting and they command a lot of attention. However, once you match the level to account for the difference in efficiency, I'll be damned if I still don't prefer the CF-1s.

I have tried the KLF-20s and the CF-1s side by side in both my living room and in my office (carpeted bedroom), and in all cases, the CF-1s have a flatter, deeper, and cleaner bass response and a more cohesive and natural sound. Those little 6.5 inch drivers in the CF-1s are just pure magic - I don't know how they do it.

I guess my search will continue on for larger Epics.

Cheers!

Too bad you missed out on the 5's. I had 5's for a few years. The guy I sold em to still has them, really good speakers. I much prefer over the 82/280/8000.

We sold both way back when. The oldest boy has the RF-5, but I think they are the II version. Anyway, I prefer the CF series if they are located where the horn is at ear height. I don't like them on the floor.

I've not heard the CF-1's, but just a comment the KLF-20's ended production in 2001 and entered production in 1996. I would bet a re-cap would level the playing field given that the capacitors are at least 20 years old. :dunno:

I'm assuming the CF's have been updated as they are vintage 94' - 96'

The CF series is my favorite tower speaker Klipsch ever produced. I went all the way through the KLF line, bought a set of beat up 4's and was floored by their sound. I sold them due to OEM replacement woofers becoming impossible to find.
