RG-1 Recap

My brothers play a lot of vinyl and the RG-1 is a neat addition that isn't too intrusive. Its got its time and place (ZZ-Top HiFi Momma) and is a lot of fun. It's also a perfect piece for a first timer to restore. Its got a pot, toggle switches, wafer switch (not sure what they are called), plenty of caps, lots of transistors, diodes, etc etc. Its very open as well and easy to service. Had my brothers in on the fun and they performed their first restoration. They are better than me because not one transistor orientation was screwed up and there was no smoke show (bit of a let down if you ask me).

Used a lot of @xlbee 's list. Made it easier for the caps. I modified the list and upped all elec. caps minus the BP ES to 50v. Also added diodes, transistors and film caps. Replaced the 100pf ceramics as well.

Xlbee's post: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/pioneer-rg-1-recap-completed.424230/

Sounds great after the recap!

You want ksc945c for center collector pinning
1s1885? Is it not a std recovery type? If so use a 1n4002,3,4
I do not think you really need to change the diodes

Ah I didn't think much about it, found a post where MTF suggested UF as a replacement. Just searched a bit more there is another thread/post where MTF mentions these are not for general rectifier use. Well it's working now but I have spares and will swap them out. Good catch thank you.

Googled and saw MTF suggesting the replacement, thought it was good as gold:

Really depends on the application. I did not look at your links but I assume they were being used as clamps between the amp output stage supply and the driver supply so in that case a faster recovery diode might be a better choice but pioneer did not think it was necessary or the parts were not available at that time so they used what they could get

Did the resto improve the sound?

I like the suggestion of recapping one of these as a first vintage audio project. Just bought one and supposedly it works fine (waiting on shipping), but might give it a shot if not.

Give it a shot. It's a perfect first time unit. The improvement in sound was noticable, although it sounded pretty good untouched.

Make sure to use the 1n4004 diodes like RCS suggested.
