Rialto 400 integrated vs. using an external DAC

I got a deal so good I couldn’t pass it up on one of the interesting Rialto 400 integrated amplifiers. It’s a 100wpc amp that for glowing reviews at $800, but can now be had for $250 or less.

It has a built in DAC, but the most specific description I can find is from the product page:

  • Wolfson Digital Analog Converter (DAC) For Audiophile Performance
Anybody know which Wolfson and if the implementation is any good?

Additionally, can anybody recommend a good DAC/Pre with volume control and a remote?

Wolfson was a chip company. They were bought out by Cirrus Logic, so not really around anymore AFAIK. Unless you have measurements of that specific implementation of that specific Wolfson chip (not chip specs from the manufacturer) then you have no idea how good the internal DAC. Most internal DACs built into receivers and integrated amps are not that good when measured.

What is your budget for this DAC/Pre? Do you need any special features like DSD playback?
