Richard Gray 600 RM Pro power conditioner

Hi guys,

I wanted to share some pics of the Richard Gray's 600 power conditioner I've just received, as I couldn't fine any on the internet.

It has 6 sockets on the back, 4 separately switched, and 2 permanent, and 1 convenient one on the front of the chassis.

The 2 bypass switches for the switched sockets on the back were damaged during shipping, so I had to replace them.

First this product is very well built. The chassis is very solid and easy to open. The hardware inside is top quality, the wiring is well made, all earth ground to one chassis point.

At first, I though it was a classic insolation transformer type of device. But when I opened it, the "transformer" wasn't what I expected: too small, big gaps and 2 wires.

Ok, I got it, it's a choke, so it's a choke filtered design.

But then I traced the AC circuit and no, the choke is not serial with the AC distribution, but parallel to the AC.
That's interesting.

So that unit is not an insolation device and uses a choke in parallel of the AC.
Out of curiosity I measured it a 2H, 11.2 ohm.

So maybe some of you can enlighten me but is seems to me that this design is good to accommodate current spike demand, as the choke stores energy as flux, and maybe reduced DC component in the main line if there is, but that's about it?

Had an account that had one of these on a projector. He was going to put other stuff on it but ran out of time. Lightning struck before he could get to it. The projector was the only piece in an extensive home theater that survived.

That small transformer, I`m thinking by looking at it, is used to power the low powered product support/control electronics.
I`ve heard of them, but I have no prior experience with Richard Grey power products, but that`s my speculative guess.
 
Yes Bill you are correct. It powers the relays.

Ceylon, I can't say I've heard a sonic difference. For me it's more to protect from AC spikes in the summer and lightnings.

I am using 2 Running Springs on my system. The Gray is new in my bedroom system, and they recommend using that device with a real isolation transformer they have.
But that one is very pricey.

I use Tripp-Lite`s 15 amp rated isolation transformers on both of my repair benches to power/protect my test equipment.
And they were reasonably priced yrs. ago when I purchased them, plus they also include surge/spike protection internally.
 
Looks like that choke absorbed the spike from the lightning: amazing it survived.

That is a small power transformer that is used to power the device`s support electronics, Brice, and yes one of it`s open frame`s bobbins tape wrap appears to show excessive heat deformation stress.
