Riddle me this about 12AV7's!!

Where the heck is S'toon?
Morning!!

So this Sonic Frontiers pre I have can be jumpered for 12AT7 and 6DJ8 tubes...and seeing that I'm not a big fan of the 6922 sound, I am opting to move the jumper over and grab some varieties of 12AT7's.

Here is what I've found so far that'll cross over: 6201, 6211, 5965, 7062, 6414, 6829, 6679, 7728, E180CC, ECC81, E81CC, ECC801S, CV4024, M8162, CV455, 6060, A2900

K...tell me, where does the 12AV7 come in??

I've read that it is the same tube as the 5965 but not a military tube which the 5965 is. True or false?? If true, then it should drop in with no issues correct??

I had a Jolida hybrid a couple of years back and I found, with my tastes, that the 5751 tube was excellent as a repalcement for the standard 12AX7's that the amp took.

I am hoping that the 5965\12AV7 will accomplish the same for me with this pre :)

In the mean time, I have a NOS Brimar 6060 coming LOL!!!

Thanks kindly!!!

12AV7 isn't very linear - better to stick with the other numbers you mentioned. 5965 is supposed to be better...

The 5965 is a great tube but requires more filament current than the 12xxx tubes. Make sure your p/t can handle the extra load.

I really do not hear much difference from a 12at7 tube. Can these damage an amp . I roll them sometimes with different music messing around.. I see the answers above but can someone go into more detail on these? I also have some 12ay7 tubes. I know about gain but can these do damage. Thanks in advance? By the way they sound good.. just have to turn the volume up some,, understandable.

The 12AV7 is not the same as a 5965. Plate curves are different, gm is different, Rp is different, and mu is different. Regarding distortion, Sylvania Resistance Coupled Amplifier Data indicates the 12AV7 is roughly equal to a 12AY7 and substantially better than a 12AT7. The latter two have of course seen frequent use in hi-fi and guitar applications. The only issue I see with the 12AV7 is its higher filament current (450mA). Here's an excerpt, all driven with the same voltage:
