Right belt for Pioneer PL-514

Hello folks,

I do have few turntables and recently Pioneer PL-514 joined the small band of brothers (Kenwood KD-2055, Pro-ject Debut III USB, Dual CS-514, Micro Seiki MB-12). While I like to thinker with my stuff I tried few belts that I had around and none of them brings PL-514 to the right speed. The belt that is currently on it it has right speed but it is so loose and worn on one side that I just waiting for it to fail. I looked online and plenty of people reported issues with it. I tried 23.6 belt and it didn't work. Also I tried few other ones that I do not know length and none of them matched or brought the TT to right speed.

Does anyone used exactly this belt on Pioneer PL-514?

Does anyone knows any reputable company in Canada or US to get right belt for this turntable?

Slightly off topic but also what cartridge/stylus is recommended for this turntable?

I currently have those ones:
Grado G1 cartridge
Grado G2 cartridge
Audio Technica AT3600L with original stylus (new)

One Grado Green stylus...

I installed a Grado G1 with Grado Green stylus and this rides very low. I thought to get another headshell as I have some generic one currently (got the turntable without headshell) and looked into Ortofon SH-4 and Jelco HS-25 (locally available). Any experience you folks might have in this matter?
I have currently switched to AT-3600L and works just fine.

Ultimately I wanted to install Grado G2 with 8MZ Stylus (also locally available) or to place an order for Nagaoka MP-110H (combined with headshell) as the 8MZ stylus is almost the same price as Nagaoka package.

Will be grateful to hear your comments on this one!

I have a PL-514 with a Nagaoka MP-100 and love it. Sounds great so I can Rec. the Nagaoka cart. I am thinking of upgrading to the 110 stylus.

I also have another headshell for the PL-514 set up with a Audio-Technica AT-95EX...Don't use it much just a back up.

I just placed an order for a belt with Thakker in Germany. 15.50 Euro with insured shipping to Canada, speak around 23CAD. Hope this will go well.
Thanks for suggestions however all those companies in US wanted over 10USD for shipping. Double the price from Thakker... something I do not understand.

As for the cartridges I have to reevaluate if it is better to get Nagaoka MP110H or just the stylus 8MZ for Grado G2, since I have it. I also thought about Ortofon 2M Red but was slightly confused about version 2. Do not know what is difference between regular one and ver. II. Any hints on this?

Be sure to re-align the cartridge in the provided headshell to suit the Pioneer cartridge alignment.

It is set up primarily for the Technics cartridge alignment.

Not sure what you mean by Ortofon 2M Red version 2 ? :idea:

The Grado will more then likely hum in the 514 since it has an AC synchronous motor.

The specifications are listed for both, the new version is slightly heavier.

Did not see any other differences at first glance.

Neither versions of the PnP cartridge with headshell are intented for Pioneer S arm turn tables.

The PnP versions were designed for the Technics S tone arm or other tone arm using the 52 mm cartridge alignment. :music:

I get it now. I read somewhere that they are 52mm but did not paid attention to it. Right know I see the connection since you explained. 52mm is the distance between stylus tip and back of the headshell. I think that cartridge alignment for Pioneer PL-514 is 49mm. Have to take a look again in the manual.

I think that the best way is to get Nagaoka MP-110H (I will adjust the cartridge...) after I sort out the belt issue. I might get also the Ortofon 2M Red without headshell for my Pro-ject Debut III USB.
I am also planing to get another direct drive TT and sell the other ones except Pro-ject. Might stay with Pioneer or Kenwood unless the Sony TT that is currently with my uncle gets repaired and I manage to get my hands on it since he does not use it.

You should have no problem with setting most cartridges to the 49 mm alignment with the Ortofon SH-4 headshell.

You should have no problem with resetting the Nagaoka MP-110 to the 49 mm alignment using the accompanying Nagoaka headshell. :)

I got a shock when I found out that the headshell that I had around almost did not reach 49mm. Cartridge cannot be pushed anymore back!

Update: The belt is on his way to Canada.

This is 13gr headshell and I just need to calculate what cartridge I can use with it.

Also is there any heavier counterweights for PL-514 or something that fits the Pioneer OEM but heavier?
If anyone is asking why I need the heavier counterweight, here is why: I have also Kenwood KD-2055 with original headshell, SME copy, and when I fitted this headshell with cartridge to Pioneer the front end was so heavy that I have to dial counterweight to the end. Since I will go with AT-LH13 headshell, 13 stands for 13gr, either I will need heavier counterweight or need to do some DIY improvisation. Any solution for this?

Have a look at the Stanton H4S-V2 headshell instead, it would make your cartridge alignment much easier. :)

I may forget to mention but I looked for fully adjustable headshell and AT-LH13 is horizontally adjustable. Currently I have same headshell you linked on turntable and barely fits 49mm alignment. Horizontally is slightly tilted. Need something like AT-LH13 or Jelco HS-25 or Ortofon LH-4000 (I may have some models number not right...)

Yes, I know how it looks like and that it has azimuth adjustable. This headshell will be strictly for PL-514 and this is the reason I asked for tonearm mass.

I am trying to find right balance between cartridge, headshell and tonearm.

Anyone know's the mass of the tonearm installed on PL-514???
 
After long research on Google I can report that Pioneer PL-514 tonearm mass is 7.50gr.

Original Pioneer headshell mass is 11.50gr.

This findings will swing me to Jelco HS-25 headshell as it weights 12.10gr, which is the closest match for Pioneer original headshell.

Here are the others that I have considered with azimuth adjustment:
The Audio Technica AT-LH13/OCC weights 13gr.
Ortofon LH-4000 weights 14.30gr

Also, the Jelco HS-25 I can obtain locally, which saves me the shipping time.
