I saw Fred & my dad standing side by side once, when Fred was running for Senate. Daddy was a BIG guy, 6'2" & about 250, but Fred towered over him. Not many people could make my dad seem small, but HE did.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that he was counsel to the Republican members of the Watergate committee in '73. His one little question led to the retirement of a sitting United States president:

"Mr. Butterfield, were you aware of the existence of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?"
