One of the "New Bird" altoists to emerge after the death of Charlie Parker, Phil Woods was a brilliant musician, bandleader, and composer.

He died today at the age of 83. Rest in peace, Mr. Woods.

Saw him at the DJF a couple of years ago,sitting in a wheelchair,hooked up to an oxygen bottle, blowin' his alto.Soundin' pretty good too.RIP

Now the second of my heros has passed - Phil Woods and, prior, Bud Shank.

Alto is my chosen instrument with the bands I play in and it was those 2 that got me to pick it up again after 27 years some 10 years back.

He left a legacy of fine, fine recordings and live dates. Most folks never knew he came to visit them in their cars and homes through all of the session work he did.

Play on, Phil, and thanks for the wonderful memories and inspiration you've left back here on earth!

Very sad to hear that! The first time I set foot in jazz club was the Phil Woods Quartet, must've been 30 years ago. Just blew me away. Thanks for the gift of music Phil.
