Ripping LPs

Certainly: Grado Statement Master 1 > Abbas Esoteric Audio IC's > Aksa Paris head amp > Aurealis Audio R1 Litz Copper/Silver IC's > Abbas Esoteric Audio EL84 Tube RIAA Preamp > Aurealis Audio Duelund 50:50 IC's > Schiit JIL

A mate of mine got even better results from his JIL by doing a full recap on it. I don't know what caps he used though.

I just purchase one locally tonight, and need to solve the last bit:
Pioneer PL-50L table ==> Denon DL103R cart (modified alum body and paratrace stylus) ==> Lehmann Black Cube SE phono ===> Schiit JIL ===> ????

???? = your computer

I understand the confusion Manfred - apologies.

I mean, once outputting from the JIL, what cables do you use and what laptop/PC software or other devices get in the way, before the outputted Final file is ready.

Reason being I'm pretty happy with the chain being high quality all the way to the JIL, for my own setup.
The last thing I want to do is from that point, lower the quality so that the weakest link is say, the crappy USB port on the weak laptop or something similar.
Also, some people use solid state recorders or even physical media like CDs in that last part of the process, to obtain the file recording before the software processing itself, so that would be another configuration worth hearing about for those that are trying it.....

Is that more clear?

Hey Matt - saw your post last year on this, on SNA, cheers.

So, from the JIL, where to next?

Just a straight old audio grade printer USB cable from the JIL into my PC. I've a Aucharm branded cable.

Not expensive but better than an actual printer cable. I've found digital cables do make a slight difference, but nothing remotely close to anything in the analog section of the sound chain so use good quality but don't go overboard.

I'm using AMD R5 2500U based tiny PC with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.

Hey @candyflip I never got around to sending him my JIL. Not actually sure where I put it. It's been ages since I did a rip.

cf: Alright. Well, I'd suggest to use a USB 2.0 cable of decent quality (doesn't have to be fancy, expensive "audiophile" stuff, though - unless that would make you feel better...). And assuming the Jil to be a UAC2 (= USB audio class 2.0 compliant) device, you'll need to either use an operating system, that supports UAC2 by default (for example, Windows 10 does from version 1703 up, iirc), or install a 3rd party driver (maybe Schiit provides one - don't know, as I'm not familiar with their products in general or the Jil in particular...). The computer as such, however, doesn't have to offer a lot of processing power, 'cause if you do the math, 24/192 (L)PCM would merely require a data rate of a tad over 9.2 Mbit/s - so even if one would assume quite a bit of protocol overhead, that's still pretty much nothing for pretty much any modern computer.

OS, driver and software comfiguration can be somewhat critical, though, as a bad/unsuitable configuration my cause drop-outs (in which case tools like LatencyMon or the older DPC Latency Checker can be helpful for problem diagnosis). Well, and then you'll need some kind of recording/audio editing software (like for example Audacity) for recording, which (at least in case of Windows) should ideally support ASIO or/and WASAPI to ensure clean recording (in the sense of the OS not tampering with the signal e.g. by unwanted resampling...) - and/or possibly some more specialised software, depending on how much additional processing you might have in mind (I don't do any, hence from my side no particular recommendations in that regard...).

And yes, some people prefer to use dedicated digital recorders for the purpose. Me included, because I don't see, why one of my computers should be occupied by such a comparatively trivial task, additionally consuming quite a bit more energy than my little recorder at that. And by using my little recorder, I also needn't worry about configuration issues (including possibly interference by other software, like for example the anti-virus sudddenly deciding to upgrate its signature database) - as using the dedicated recorder ensures clean recording.

Which little recorder do you use?
And what's your Analog to digital chain please?

cf: Sony PCM-M10 - one of the best very compact models for hifi use, but unfortunately discontinued a few years ago (just like the Roland R-05, which was also a good one for hifi use, but also discontinued a bit later...).

Analogue chain varies (got too much stuff...), but most usually it's a slightly modified Dual 505-4 with an AT120 family body plus ATN152LP into the slightly modified phono stage of a Marantz PM8000 (and then simply from the record-outs to the line-in of the Sony with a 2x RCA to miniTRS (3.5 mm stereo) adaptor cable).

FYI : I've setlled on...

Pioneer PL-50L table ==> Denon DL103R cart (modified alum body and paratrace stylus) ==> Lehmann Black Cube SE phono ===> Schiit JIL ===> laptop thru the standard USB and then AUDACITY at 24/192 rate WAV.

cheers
